I Don't Want You to Die
The Flaming Lips Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well it’s a funny thing when your friends are chasing you
Like you hit one of them in the balls and stuff like that
Most times they’ll stop chasing you after a while when they can’t catch you
But cops don’t do that and, and, and I found out the hard way
But, but they proceeded to tell an old lady to go back inside
And right when they were fixing to go through the door
They pulled the drummer down and slammed him on the ground
Slammed him, slammed him

Needless to say the crowd went a little crazy
And so did the cops, they were in a frenzy
They came in and started macing everybody
About that time, macing
Bombing, macing, whatever you need to bug…you the bugs all night, your house
So he comes through, one cop comes through
Bumps me on the back
Without even thinking
In my primal rage stage I was inebriated with alcohol,
That is it, that is it
And young, young vitality, vitality
And I don’t even think, and I grab the cop from behind
And he, and he and I was like what are you doing man?
And he turns around and proceeds to mace me right in my face
Not even a foot, away from my face
So I stop thinking, I just take off running
I was actually high-stepping, it was like
My buddy said he saw me, and I was like he saw some
Long legged creature just like
He took a base high stepping
Going down sixth street, stop tinkling
So I stopped and turned around

Well it’s a funny thing when your friends are chasing you
Like you hit one of them in the balls and stuff like that
Most times they’ll stop chasing you after a while when they can’t catch you
But cops don’t do that, and, and, and I found out the hard way
Because they caught me, because they caught me
Because they caught me, because they caught me
When he's high-steppin' I can’t catch that
Needless to say I turned around
And they came and caught up with me
And proceeded to take me to the ground

And taser me, taser me, taser me
Tasered and maced, uh, pretty good

Overall Meaning

The Flaming Lips's song "I Don't Want You to Die" narrates a story of an experience with the police. The song starts with the singer being chased by their friends, and describes the different outcomes of being chased by friends and by police officers. The lyrics suggest that the police are not as forgiving as friends, and the singer learned that the "hard way."

The story progresses to a concert, where chaos ensues, and the cops start macing the crowd. The singer then describes being bumped by a cop, and in a moment of inebriation and rage, grabbing the cop from behind. This leads to the cop macing the singer, who then takes off running. The singer is eventually caught by the police, who proceed to taser and mace them.

The song reflects on the violence and lack of empathy that can sometimes be present in law enforcement. The lyrics paint a picture of a system that is quick to use force and violence, even in situations that could be resolved peacefully. Overall, the song serves as a commentary on police brutality and the often-unjustified use of force.

They can find a way in the future someday A drug that lets us live forever, me and you will take it And after all we're only roses when we die, oh, I don't want to say goodbye After all we're only roses in the sky, oh, I don't want to say goodbye It's hard to say goodbye when the sun is setting in the sky In the sky, in the sky
