Depending on the WHY, there may also be a loud bang (if a door or hatch has failed) accompanied by a loud rush of air as pressure moves outside. Dust and loose objects will also fly about.

The other thing Hollywood neglects to mention is a "slow leak" decompression. This is usually due to a fault in the pressurization system and while still serious, will not generally result in the "plunge" the media love to report. There's still an emergency descent, but it's mostly more normal and the flight crew will have time to tell you what's about to happen.

Newer aircraft also have automatic announcements (my last airline played an announcement in several languages which was also displayed on the screens "emergency descent, put on your mask and fasten your seatbelts"

Even Boeing planes made in the 80s had automatic (PRAM) announcements.

I still remember one of them vividly after hearing it for reals:

"This is an emergency annoucement: descent descent, due to a loss of cabin pressure oxygen is required, put on your mask and remain seated. Fasten your seatbelts and follow crew instructions. This is an emergency announcement, descent descent"

They should actually let you know in the safety leaflet that if we lose cabin air pressure, and then do a nose dive, that we are not actually falling to our death. That would be more helpful than showing us that your life vests have a fancy whistle attached.

@mishmash65 I used to write loose when I meant lose, also, until I read a correction given to someone else who did it, and the person correcting said something explaining the pronunciation of loose is what you call, for instance giant pants that no longer stay up after the pants owner lost 100 lbs: those pants now look "loose". Every time I write loose, to mean something lost, I go through what that person said, to correct: 'Why would you write "loose" (baggy) when you mean lose (luze)? The person was not putting you down, just giving you a heads up to the correct spelling. A LOT of people write loose when the word they intend sounds like luze. It's not a big deal, just a friendly gesture. Everyone still understood you meant 'lose" and agreed with your idea that somehow passengers ought to get the explanation not to worry in the event of a nose dive shown by your 2.3K likes so far. How about, a pre-recorded explanation that is activated if cabin pressure is lost, in beautiful, calm tones instead? I also think earphones ought to be attached so that explanation and any further information and instructions will be heard, as loss of cabin pressure is one of several possible noisy things that might prevent anyone from hearing anything.

From a manufacturer's perspective, we don't care about the interior as much as the mechanics of the aircraft. Interiors has a lot of little fixes to make it look good or make it work correctly like adding a spot of glue to a carpet that won't stay down. Working parts are a different story. If there is a scratch measuring .003 inches in depth it must be fixed with engineering sign off. That's about what your fingernail can catch on. That's a damage tolerance limit for even tiny brackets that hold wires. Critical equipment often has even tighter tolerances such as bearing surfaces mating within .0005 inches that are hand installed or certain bolts require being torqued in a pattern with a record of what torque each bolt was tightened to, including retorque. Smudge mark on a sidewall in the cabin? Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. No joke, we don't care about your interiors beyond it looking nice. It won't bring down the plane.

I’m only a student pilot and we learn the same stuff such as pitching the plane toward the ground for the never exceed speed and what to do in different emergency situations. The FAA has everyone in the sky learn stuff like this to ensure that everyone is being safe no matter if you’re a student, private, instrument, or commercial pilot.

The seat-belt latch confusion warned of here has happened, quite tragically. I don't recall the name of the documentary, but in it a young women tearfully recounted how she and her grandmother, seated a few rows apart, had survived the United airlines DC10 crash in Sioux City, Iowa. How she made her way through the thickening smoke and over to where her Grandmother was, hanging upside down - strapped into her seat. In the chaos neither of them could get the buckle to unlatch, no matter how hard they pressed on it. With flames approaching and with complete panic setting in, the girl was told by her grandmother to go on and save herself, to get out now - that she had her whole life ahead of her.

@Nogrim Stoneson Is this story true? If the masks are dropped, all of them must be inspected, replaced as needed, and repacked. Where I'm from they have to maintain below a certain amount of failure to drop rates in three consecutive deployments before the system is serviceable. If any of the passengers pulled the masks down the valves for the breathing oxygen would open or they would activate the chemical oxygen generators which would have to be replaced or refilled and tested to be deemed serviceable.

I was on a flight where all of them dropped while we still on the ground, around the time they closed the doors iirc. they dropped and it was hilariously sad to watch the flight crew try to put them all back, they finally ended up duct taping one closed :D. knowing how "helpful" they are it makes a lot more sense why it was treated so nonchalantly.

I was on a very turbulent flight once and the pilot said at the start of the descent: "We've been advised not to land due to the strong winds, but I'm gonna give it a try anyway". We weren't sure if he was joking until he actually tried to land while we were literally blown and shifted in every direction like a leaf in a hurricane. Everyone around me was either praying or throwing up. In the end, he pulled up and away something like 20 metres off the ground, then took us to a nearby airport 40 minutes away. I'm still having nightmares about it 10 years later and needless to say, I'm not flying that airline ever again.

Honestly that just sounds like he was trying his best not to inconvenience you by going to another airport far away. He certainly wouldn't risk the lives of everyone on board (including his own) for no reason so it probably wasn't as dangerous as it seemed to you.

Thats not airline fault. Its a pretty common situation, if crosswinds doesnt exceed 35 knots is pilots decision if we land or not. As he didnt see posible to make a safe landing he decide to go around. Is something that we are trained for, and he made the correct decision of going to the alternate airport and dont giving it a second try.

I haven't flown since my teen years but I've been on several flights back then and they always had safety videos during pre-flight, usually accompanied by a flight attendant showing everything in the front. @apoptose Yes, cause when a gas expands (or gas mixture, as in case of ordinary air) it gets cooler. If said gas mixture contains water in gaseous phase, the capability of the gas to contain it diminishes with the temperature, so the water condenses into mist. In case of fuselage decompression, it's an abrupt process.

@ur mom At most we are talking about one bar of pressure, sea level versus vacuum. Most people can dive to 10m depth quite comfortably which is already the same pressure differential. I think you should educate yourself.

Apparently the air pressure at 10000ft or 3048m is "only" 30% lower than at sea level so diving to 10m is three times the pressure differential.

I've had it happen to me once. The pilot comes on and says, "We're losing cabin pressure, I'm going to take us to a lower altitude." Oh, and the masks never dropped. Since that day, whenever I've flown and someone says, "In the event that we lose cabin pressure, masks will drop . . ." I can't help but mutter "Liar!"

it probably is terrifying as lets say you're cruise is 35,000 you have to dive to 10,000 as that is a safe altitude. it isn't fun for those (like me) who hate roller coasters or sudden drops, yet here I am wanting to be an airline pilot and you are trained how to do it and I think do it in a sim. this is actually more common than most people think. I know lots of pilots who are terrified of roller coasters and heights yet they fly at 35,00 feet and would do that maneuver without hesitation if necessary. pilots are weird sometimes

One caveat would be that emergency decent would still probably require clearance from Air Traffic Controllers to fly at a lower altitude so the “dive” may not happen immediately after face masks appear. Again, I say “probably”.

My attitude toward the risks of air travel is, if a life-threatening incident happens, it's most likely going to be on takeoff or landing, not while in the air, and you won't be able to do anything about it in any case. If such an event does occur in midair, think of yourself as already dead. You, as a person, are already dead, and your body is functioning on pure instinct. As "flight" (an unavoidable pun here) is out, there's just "fight" or "freeze."

To say that one death = a tragedy but that a million deaths = a statistic...that doesn't make sense. The death of ONE IN A MILLION would be the statistic, or one death among a million others. A million deaths is just...a million tragedies I guess (or a million blessings, depending on who's doing the dying). I mean honestly every death is a statistic whether it's one, a million at once, or one in a million.

I've been on a flight where the pilot had to use some of their emergency training. When touching down during a storm the plane began to tip to one side, I being in the wing row watching in horror as the wing tip rapidly approached the tarmac, just as it looked like it would hit the power went back on and we took off again to take another attempt at landing, only time I've ever shaken a pilots hand post 9/11.

@Kurt Punches Things if a plane goes down in Pacific Ocean, which is the one I’m usually flying over when I travel because live in AK, no one is going to survive in that water without a survival suit. About five minutes and you will start to get hypothermia and your body will start to seize up after that. Basically if a plane goes down between Anchorage and Seattle, my chances of survival are slim even if I make it through the collision.

As a pilot my self, this video is a complete slap in the face to the Cabin Crew and safety professionals in aviation. All of what you said is featured in either a Safety Demo or Video. Using derogatory language is completely unprofessional and flat out inappropriate. I agree that more people need to pay attention during the safety demonstration. But telling people NOT to use a LIFE VEST while in the MIDDLE OF THE OCEAN is complete nonsense. You need to rethink this video because if you think that the snack cart is more important than seat belts, than your insane.

It was comforting lol. I learned more from this than any demonstrations.
My dad and I were boarding a Delta flt from ATL to LAX. We stepped to the side so the pilot could board.
I'll never forget looking down at his briefcase. It had a "U.S. Air Force" sticker on it. He greeted us all pleasantly and relaxed.
We were barely in the air and an engine went on 🔥.
My dad, a U.S. Army Vet. helicopter pilot was reading. Im like "Uhhh Dad!"He didn't look up
from his magazine. Just calmly said "He's got this".
He indeed did

Pilots are very smart cos to do all those moves they've got to be accurate and tight then they've got to have a crafty mind to maneuver in crafty ways but it just takes a person that just believes in being able to do those things or anything they set their mind to and they know if anything should go wrong an inventive mind is useful in all sorts of situations, so you just believe in others that they can do it especially when this is your life as well as the others your responsible for.

This video is awesome! I would much rather them play this video before a flight than what they normally do. I think most people feel safer when they are being leveled with. Honestly the only time I take my seatbelt off when I'm flying is if I have to use the bathroom. I'm not even afraid of flying, it just always seems like a good choice. I'm not eager to get the window seat, either ever since I saw a video about a Woman who got sucked halfway out of one. I understand it's super rare, but it still kinda permanently ruined getting the window seat for me.

Very informative BUT I question the reasoning about lifejackets, apparently based on just a few examples. I am an oceanographer and have done a sea survival course. Without a life jacket or some other floatation aid, even the strongest swimmers can lose it due to hypothermia or exhaustion. I would definitely take mine if we did a water landing, even in a large river (which could be pretty cold and have strong currents.). Great video though!

The whole point is the definition of a dive is to "plunge deeply". This isn't what happens during a controlled emergency decent. An emergency decent is usually caused by a rapid decompression, which usually is the result of a valve becoming stuck open or similar. The flight crew solve this by descending to an altitude where there is enough oxygen to breathe. They don't "dive" and overstress the aircraft potentially causing more damage or injuries.

It's only in the movies where you have extreme dives, because thats more exciting to watch.

Such statememts give people that are already nervous about flying more nervous when they really shouldnt be

I have had panic attacks (2 only) in the plane, in what I understand (even during the attack) are COMPLETELY SAFE SITUATIONS (turbulence, unpredicted change of seats). I knew most of this info before I started suffering from the flight related anxiety, but consciously knowing doesn't really stop me from being anxious. But Xanax does. YAAAAAAAY. I really make an effort to be a breezy chill passager whenever I can't take the medication but it's so hard tho.

I’ve been a flight attendant for 31 years.
I love this video. It is blatantly and hilariously true, whilst also respecting us.
90 seconds is what we are trained to get you out if there’s an emergency. We’re also CPR and AED qualified. Keep your arms and legs out of the aisle whilst we drag that 300 pound cart at an incline. Wear your seatbelt. Turbulence is a very serious thing. You’re more likely to be injured from turbulence than anything else.
Most important: don’t grunt or feel inconvenienced when we block off the lavatories when the pilots need them.
They are the most important people on the plane!

@Archangel from the age of sail. The person who operated the tiller (the bar attached to the rudder) was the coxwain. The area they stayed in was the coxwain's pit, which over time, became the cockpit.

Don't worry i keep my feet and arms in anyway out of fear of them being mowed down lol the other thing people should also do is bring baby wipes on flight in order to keep the toilet clean for each other and wipe up after that damn mess cos it ain't gonna clean itself during a 3 hour flight of 30 passengers, before or after use grab one of your wipes and clean that damn seat please... lol i boke at people's pee on the seat after use and it accumulates quickly and may not have been cleaned from the last flight. Maybe it's time baby wipes were provided in there too so they're always there.

And this would totally ease me into a sense of safety. Especially the 95% survival and 55% in a SERIOUS crash lol.
Its just scary cause the only crashes you hear about are the ones that have a high fatality count

@BG true it was good. But if "serious" means 1 or more died and 10000 serious crashes had 5000 with 10% dying and 5000 with 100% dying, you get that 55%. But I mean it's still effectively an all or nothing affair.

Most crashes either everyone dies or everyone survives or nearly so. So those stats arent that reassuring, it just says that most "crashes" are really small incidents not serious ones. Of the serious ones, the stats are still quite skewed as they over classify non serious ones as serious. There are occasional ones where somewhere between 30 and 70% survive but I think it's quite rare. But these real horrifying scenarios are exceedingly rare.

I remember on my second time flying, which happened just after 911 - I got really nervous about flying. I was almost about to have an anxiety attack on the plane when the man sitting next to me told me he's a pilot and asked me to explain the things I was most worried about. I asked what would happen if one of the engines died, he said the plane could fly on one engine just fine and land safely. I was worried about the wings wobbling, and he said the planes were tested at forces that normal flying could never replicate and the wings were just fine. He started to go on about how even with no power, pilots train to land planes with minimal to no damage, etc.. After about 15 minutes of talking I had calmed down, was looking out the window relaxed and enjoying the rest of my flight.

There is a certification some twin engine aircraft have called ETOPS. it stands for extended twin engine operations. You will generally see it written on the nose landing gear doors. This is a rating system that shows how many minutes the aircraft is allowed to fly away from a runway. It's to ensure that you will always find a safe landing if something goes wrong. Wings have to be tested to 150% maximum theoretical load. So if the plane was flying in the worst imaginable turbulence we can come up with, it needs to handle 1.5x that force. Aircraft also have lots of failsafes. Most commercial airliners run electric power from generators mounted to the engines, with only 1 generator being required to run everything to fly the plane. If both engines fail for some reason, there is also the APU, auxiliary power unit, generally mounted at the tail. That's the exhaust you see at the backs of the planes. This is generally used for generating enough power to start the engines or for ground power when there is no stinger present. A stinger is what we call the power lines that plug into aircraft. This works as failsafe power if both engines are lost. If all of these have failed, there is still the RAT, ram air turbine, a propeller that drops down below the aircraft to generate emergency power using the planes own momentum. This will generally keep just enough power to run flight controls and everything in the cockpit but passengers won't have amenities like in flight entertainment, or light. Even if that fails, most planes have cable backups for their flight controls and newer planes use a battery system to run a hydraulic failsafe system. Without a flight control being damaged, it is almost impossible for a pilot to lose control of their flight surfaces.
