Pale Beneath the Tan
The Front Bottoms Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Squeeze my arms a little tighter
Let me know I'm still alive
Cause you're the only one here keeping both my eyes open tonight
And I know that we got problems
Who are they to criticize
If I tell you all my secrets would you tell me all your lies
I want her to know that it's because
I have someone that makes me feel the same exact way that she does
And I will not deny the privilege to someone else who wants my love
I have stitched a mask of confidence and I wear it like a glove
And a man that knows what he's talking, spoke to me today
He said that no ones going to listen until you mean every word you say
So if you can't find the feeling, you better learn to lie
And if you know we're gonna fail, then there's no point to even try
No point to try, no point try, no point to try
I don't get it for real, this is blowing my mind
We keep saying we're unhappy and they keep saying that we're fine
I guess pain will be the only thing I ever get to bring
But I will send it through the air like a loosely gripped baseball bat swing
All I ever wanted was something different, maybe by another name
We could set ourselves on fire, there is cleansing in the flame
So keep clapping and dancing
Let them know you're still alive and if you're tired of giving up
At least make them think that you survived
So keep laughing, its not funny but at least you don't have to cry
When you wake up in the morning and you know you're still alive
You're still alive, you know you're still alive
You're still alive, you know you're still alive
Until we break down, til we shut down
Until the weight of our lifeless bodies hit the ground
Until we break down, til we shut down
Until the weight of our lifeless bodies hit the ground
Until we break down, til we shut down
Until the weight of our lifeless bodies hit the ground
And a man that knows what he's talking, spoke to me today
He said that no ones going to listen until you mean every word you say
So if you can't find the feeling, you better learn to lie
And if you know we're gonna fail, then there's little point to even try
Little point to try
The lyrics of "Pale Beneath the Tan" by The Front Bottoms delve into themes of self-doubt, vulnerability, and the need for validation. The opening lines, "Squeeze, squeeze, squeeze, squeeze my arms a little tighter, Let me know I'm still alive," suggest a longing for confirmation of one's existence and connection with another person. The singer acknowledges the presence of problems and critics but expresses a willingness to share their secrets if the other person reciprocates with honesty.
The lyricist reveals that they have found someone who makes them feel the way they once felt about another person, indicating a potential shift in affection. The line "I have stitched a mask of confidence and I wear it like a glove" suggests that the singer has constructed a facade of self-assurance, possibly as a defense mechanism. They receive advice from someone who emphasizes the importance of genuine expression in being heard and understood.
The second verse reflects on the unending cycle of unhappiness and the struggle to find something different, even if it is labeled differently. The desire to set oneself on fire metaphorically represents a desire for catharsis and rebirth. The chorus encourages the outward display of happiness and survival, even when feeling tired and defeated. The repetition of "You're still alive" serves as a reminder to keep going despite the challenges.
The closing verses revisit the advice received earlier, reminding the listener that meaningful words and the willingness to try are essential for being heard. These lines suggest that lying or giving up due to anticipated failure only undermines potential success and fulfillment.
Line by Line Meaning
Squeeze, squeeze, squeeze
Hold me tighter, reassure me of my existence
Squeeze my arms a little tighter
Show me that I'm still alive and not alone
Let me know I'm still alive
Give me the confirmation that I am still breathing
Cause you're the only one here keeping both my eyes open tonight
You are the sole reason I am not succumbing to darkness tonight
And I know that we got problems
We are aware of our issues and challenges
Who are they to criticize
Why should others judge us?
If I tell you all my secrets would you tell me all your lies
If I entrust you with my vulnerabilities, will you reciprocate with deception?
And when I stop writing her letters
When I cease communicating with her through letters
I want her to know that it's because
I want her to understand that the reason is
I have someone that makes me feel the same exact way that she does
I have found another person who evokes the same emotions she does
And I will not deny the privilege to someone else who wants my love
I will not withhold the opportunity for someone else to experience my affection
I have stitched a mask of confidence and I wear it like a glove
I have constructed a facade of assurance and wear it effortlessly
And a man that knows what he's talking, spoke to me today
Today, a wise man who possesses understanding shared his words with me
He said that no ones going to listen until you mean every word you say
He conveyed that people will not pay attention until your words are sincere
So if you can't find the feeling, you better learn to lie
If you cannot discover genuine emotions, it's best to deceive
And if you know we're gonna fail, then there's no point to even try
If we are aware of our impending failure, attempting becomes futile
I don't get it for real, this is blowing my mind
I genuinely do not comprehend, it baffles me completely
We keep saying we're unhappy and they keep saying that we're fine
We repeatedly express our discontent, yet others insist we are content
I guess pain will be the only thing I ever get to bring
Seems like suffering will be the sole contribution I make
But I will send it through the air like a loosely gripped baseball bat swing
Nevertheless, I will transmit it through the atmosphere with an uncertain intensity
All I ever wanted was something different, maybe by another name
My desire was always for an alternative, perhaps under a different label
We could set ourselves on fire, there is cleansing in the flame
We could ignite ourselves, experiencing purification within the flames
So keep clapping and dancing
Continue applauding and dancing
Let them know you're still alive and if you're tired of giving up
Demonstrate your survival and if you're weary of surrendering
At least make them think that you survived
At the very least, make them believe you have endured
So keep laughing, its not funny but at least you don't have to cry
Continue laughing, even though it is not amusing, it spares you tears
When you wake up in the morning and you know you're still alive
When you awaken in the morning and comprehend your continued existence
Until we break down, til we shut down
Until we collapse and shut ourselves off
Until the weight of our lifeless bodies hit the ground
Until the heaviness of our motionless forms strikes the earth
You're still alive, you know you're still alive
You are still alive, you are aware of your continued existence
And a man that knows what he's talking, spoke to me today
Today, a wise man who possesses understanding shared his words with me
He said that no ones going to listen until you mean every word you say
He conveyed that people will not pay attention until your words are sincere
So if you can't find the feeling, you better learn to lie
If you cannot discover genuine emotions, it's best to deceive
And if you know we're gonna fail, then there's little point to even try
If we are aware of our impending failure, attempting becomes pointless
Little point to try
There is little purpose in trying
