Later, as The Getaway, they were signed to Epitaph Records after the label's owner, Brett Gurewitz, heard the song "Ex Marks The Spot" via Punknews.org.
Due to legal reasons (there is a Canadian band with the name The Getaway), they changed their name to Matchbook Romance which they are now known as.

So you say you've tried but just can't find the measure
People around you are giving you pressure
Try to resist, all the bad things all around you
If you taste them, they will haunt you
So come, take me by the hand, we'll leave this troubled land
I know we can, I know we can, I know we can, I know we can
What ya, what ya, what ya, what ya know?
Watch all the stars, they lead in the right direction
Not to heed them is a bad reflection
They'll show you the way to what you have been seeking
To ignore them you're only cheating
So come, take me by the hand, we'll leave this troubled land
Why don't you get away? Get away
Lay awake at night till the sun comes up in the morning
Never excited; it all seems boring
Make up your mind which way to go about it
Choose your road, just don't doubt it
So come, take me by the hand, we'll leave this troubled land
I know we can. I know we can, I know we can, I know we can
Ah. Get away, let's leave today, let's get away!
Let's leave today, let's get away
The lyrics of "Getaway" by The Getaway People are an invitation to escape from the pressures and negativity of the world we live in. The song's message is simple yet powerful: if you feel trapped by your circumstances, if you're surrounded by people who bring you down, if you're lost and don't know where to turn, the solution is to get away. The singer urges the listener to take his hand and leave this troubled land behind, to follow the stars that lead in the right direction, and to make up their mind about which road to take.
The verses suggest that the world is full of bad things that can haunt you if you let them. The pressure to conform, to fit in, to be like everyone else is overwhelming. But succumbing to that pressure is a mistake, as it will only make you feel more trapped and unhappy. The chorus repeats the phrase "Get away, let's leave today, let's get away" as a mantra, an affirmation that it is possible to escape and start anew.
Overall, "Getaway" is a song about hope and possibility. It acknowledges the difficulties of life but also offers a way out. It reminds us that we have the power to change our circumstances and to choose our own path.

[Verse 1]
That's right, you're right, we will do our thing tonight alright
Take me through the future
It's time, you're fine, just another color coded crime
Incision and a suture
You told my friend we would get it on no matter when
A supercavitation
Let's go, you show me something no one will ever know
A love hallucination
[Chorus]
Another lonely superstar to getaway inside your car
Take it much too far
Surrender to the brave inside a lover that another tried
Take it, too my ride
[Post-Chorus]
You don't have to keep it if it's mine
(Another lonely superstar to getaway inside your car)
Another place maybe another time
(Surrender to the brave inside a lover that another tried)
[Verse 2]
Complete repeat sittin' in your car and on your street
Lost in California
Let's steal this wheel, take a spin to find out how we feel
Just around the corner
Slow down for sound, turn it up and no we can’t be found
The body that we transcend
Asleep, you weep, find out that the trick is never cheap
A melancholy girlfriend
[Bridge]
That's right, you're right, we will do our thing tonight, alright
Drive the constellation
It's time, you're fine, just another color coded crime
The song is fascination
[Chorus]
Another lonely superstar to getaway inside your car
Take it much too far
Surrender to the brave inside the lover that another tried
Take it, too my ride
[Post-Chorus 2]
A May-December might not be so smart
(Another lonely superstar to getaway inside your car)
Arrivals that we wish would not depart
(Surrender to the brave inside a lover that another tried)
[Outro]
Don't be late 'cause you're my savior
Make it great whatever stays
Golden gate my rearranger
Hold my name inside your rays

Typical stuff found within a RHCP song:
-Funky tune
-Rhimes
-An ass kicker bassline
-The word "California"
@RyJKow
There aren't even that many songs that have California in the lyrics

@goldengnads
the jokes about CA mentions in rhcp songs is more of a dead horse than the references themselves. good job.
it would be more appropriate to talk about how lil wayne always raps about bitches and black folks.
@volejcore3933
forgot awesome choruses.
@JohnDoeTheGoodGuy
They don't even mention California in more than half of their songs, pal.
What are you on about?
@spiritualconnection4807
Josh's guitar work is really underrated imo. The guitar parts in this song (especially chorus and outro) show why he is an excellent musician. He will never be forgotten.
@gogoyubari366
What makes you believe it's underrated? Did you travel the globe taking a survey from every citizen of the world? Please explain.
@TwpsynMawr
@@gogoyubari366 because he is overshadowed by frusciante.. duhh
@jonbrook4009
At the risk of causing a meltdown among RHCP fans I think Frusciante is the luckiest guitarist alive. His best stuff is basically watered-down Jimi Hendrix rip-offs - at its peak in tracks like Dani California and Slow Cheetah - and at its worst it's unlistenable, badly-played with no enthusiasm at all - 'Easily' and 'Californication' prime examples. He has some nice musical ideas but I think his heroin addiction pickled him for a while. I thought JK did a great job with the Peppers: the guitar tone on 'Sick Love' really shouldn't work but it does - in fact I can't imagine that song with any other guitar sound.
