Lightning
The Glorious Sons Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You know the night is our addiction
It feels right in the blaze of the stars
And that's cause we spend too much time thinking
Looking to find a place better than where we are

They got a red flag for the beast in me
And they're feeding fire that burns beneath my feet
I'll let it burn

Wake up
Come on and catch a little lightning
There's darker places than this
There's darker places than this
Wake up
Come on can't you hear the thunder
There's darker places than this
There's darker places than this

If they're right
You know the satisfying burn
Of the fear we all grew to learn
And we wait for something, anything to happen at all
Oh we wait for something, anything to happen at all

Wake up
Come on and catch a little lightning
There's darker places than this
There's darker places than this
Wake up
Come on can't you hear the thunder
There's darker places than this
There's darker places than this

And we wait for something, anything to happen at all
Oh we wait for something, anything to happen at all

They got a red flag for the beast in me
And they're feeding fire that burns beneath my feet

Wake up
Come on and catch a little lightning
There's darker places than this
There's darker places than this
Wake up
Come on can't you hear the thunder
There's darker places than this
There's darker places than this

There's darker places than this
There's darker places than this

Overall Meaning

The Glorious Sons's song Lightning is a tribute to the power of the night and the allure of darkness. Opening with the line "you know the night is our addiction," the song evokes a sense of restlessness and yearning for something more. The lyrics suggest that the characters in the song spend too much time thinking about finding a better place, and that they are willing to risk it all for a chance at something greater.

The chorus serves as a call to action, urging the listener to "wake up" and catch a little lightning. The repeated phrase "there's darker places than this" implies that there is danger in staying where you are, and encourages the listener to take risks and explore the unknown. The idea of catching lightning serves as a metaphor for seizing opportunities and not letting them pass by.

The line "they got a red flag for the beast in me" is particularly powerful, suggesting that the singer has an inner fire and an untamed nature that sets them apart from others. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, emphasizing the urgency of taking action and not waiting for something to happen.

Overall, Lightning is a compelling song that speaks to the human desire for adventure, risk-taking, and a sense of purpose. It encourages the listener to embrace their wild side and seize the opportunities that come their way.

This song hits me hard and it’s difficult not to cry. The Sons have been a part of a huge growing experience for me and I cannot thank them enough. I’m getting “There’s darker places than this” with their logo tattooed soon. Because without them I wouldn’t be here right now honestly. I hope they see this.

I'll tell ya, you,re not alone...ever. If you are in those dark places, others are too. I've relied on the Glorious Sons a few times to help get me through. During a particular chaotic time, I relied heavily on them. Ive posted my story on TGS feeds a number of times, but always deleted them out of uncertainty, embarrassment, or feeling like nobody else would get where I was coming from. My saving grace was I was stupid busy at the time and got through it. There are people though, who think I should have been experiencing a positive(in some ways it was) experience, but some of the the dark, negative, chaotic things far outweighed the good.It was rough. You made this post one year ago and I hope you are striving and thriving these days, Hugs!

I'm 60 yrs old, I suffered from severe depression a while back, I did not know who these guys were, I did not know all the lyrics, but when this chorus would ring out with that powerful vocal " WAKE UP" it would open my eyes, I could put things in the right place. Also the line "IT GETS DARKER THAN THIS" would strike a cord. Lost my parents before I was a teenage, and my best friend in a car accident before I was 20 and many friends and a couple of partners( co-workers) in underground mining.
It was just the other day once again this song came up on the radio , and finally I looked them up. WOW!!!!
Thank you to " The Glorious Sons" Powerful lyrics and music, I wish you guys all the success in the world!!

The Sons hit the nail on the head it's a shout out to people in depression that there's better places. He's telling you to stick around It will change. Doesn't even matter if it gets better or stays the same but, my brother's and sisters it will change. Tomorrow is a new day. Can it get worse? Possibly but there are cycles. Reserve your soul for the creator don't let yourself slide into this world. This world is temporary. Look up and have faith and you will be fine.
