The Good Life started out as a means for Tim Kasher to use a songwriting approach that differed from his other projects (namely, Cursive), but it didn’t take long for the solo project to become a band, and for that band to finally come into its own.
The Good Life’s sound has evolved from the refined, quiet pop of the first full-length, Novena on a Nocturn, to the moody hooks of 2002’s Black Out, to the sing-along anthems of divorce and disillusionment found on the recent Lovers Need Lawyers EP. The sum of these parts is found on Album of the Year.
Album of the Year brings all that is the sound of The Good Life to fruition – catchy, moody pop rock that fluctuates between the all-ages club and the smoky cabaret, right alongside sing-along crescendos that spin into cinematic bursts. In short, every song has a plan – every song is going someplace, and lyrically, going there will inevitably involve leaving, being left, or leaving in anticipation of being left. Kasher’s ability to cleverly turn an innocuous phrase into a malicious slur of ill will leaves you not knowing whether to laugh or cry, all the while giving you the distinct impression that you’ll be quoting him at some point down the road. With that said, could Album of the Year just as well be called Break-up Album of the Year? Maybe. But that would limit it to being compared only to other break-up albums, and, well, it can hold its own.
The follow-up to this year’s Lovers Need Lawyers EP features Tim Kasher, Stefanie Drootin, Ryan Fox, and Roger Lewis, as well as a guest vocal performance on "Inmates" from former The Good Life member Jiha Lee.

The Good Life is also a recent Nels Cline live project based on the music of Ornette Colleman. The other band memebers are: Ben Goldberg on clarinet, John Dietrich on electric guitar, Trevor Dunn on electric bass and Scott Amendola on drums.

There's a letter sent from Philadelphia
In a familiar hand, she hasn't opened it just yet
There's no telling what is says
Oh darling please, I'm down on one knee
So why? Can't I be him, that guy in all your dreams?
The one with all those qualities, impossible to achieve
So flawless, so honest, that could never be me
Well that ain't me
There's some flowers on her desk,
Doesn't he know how embarrassed she gets, receiving gifts
She hasn't opened up her card
The bouquet it says it all, DAFFODILS with baby's breath
The same bouquet she caught on their first date
That night he was a king
he flew in town for business
And ended up at the wedding
They shared life stories, between drinks
She loved him so quickly, and left him just the same
Yeah, he's still the same, he's still the same
No, he's nothing new, but he hasn't changed
always a bridesmaid, her friends all settled down
Always a bridesmaid, she dropped her bouquet on the ground
They snuck out for a cigarette
She said â??Maybe it's the whiskey sours, but I think this could be itâ?¦
Â?¦if you ask me, here and now, I think, no I know, I could make
Those wedding vows, we could sneak off in the night, andâ?¦
I could Be The Bride
I could Be The Bride
Alright, I could Be The Bride
I could Be The Bride

The lyrics to The Good Life's song "Always A Bridesmaid" tell the story of a woman who is continually a bridesmaid at her friends' weddings but has yet to find her own happy ending. She is surrounded by reminders of past relationships, including a pile of unpaid bills and a letter from an ex in Philadelphia that she has yet to open. The singer longs to be the perfect man for this woman but knows that he can't live up to her unreal expectations of the ideal guy. Despite this, the two share a moment where they both realize that they want to be together and could see themselves getting married.
The song is an honest portrayal of the struggles many people face when trying to find love and companionship. The lyrics capture the feeling of being stuck in a rut, watching as everyone else falls in love and moves on to the next stage of their lives while you are left behind. The chorus, "always a bridesmaid," is a reminder of the painful reality that some people never get to be the bride, never get to have their own happy ending.
The Good Life's "Always A Bridesmaid" highlights the universal experience of loneliness, heartbreak, and longing for something more. It speaks to the part of us that yearns for love and connection, and reminds us that it's okay to be vulnerable and ask for what we want.
