Mamacita
The Grass Roots Lyrics

Mann-Weil

She's got a foxy smile
But I better warn ya
She's the straightest lady
In the state of California
They raised her by the Book
And reads on page one
Senoritas they don't make love for fun
It just ain't done
Let me tell you 'bout

(Chorus)
Ma-ma-ma Mamacita
She'll break your heart when you meet her
She's so sweet you could eat her
Ma-ma-ma Mamacita

I dream about those cherry lips
That never been tasted
And it just tears me apart
To think? been wasted
She's saving all her love
Ain't giving none away
Senoritas they never shout olé
Till their wedding day
Come and help me now

(Chorus)

I'm gonna say "I do"
And when we get a?
We gonna watch the kids
Come one by one by one by one by one by one by one
Two three four

(Chorus x 2)

Overall Meaning

The Grass Roots's "Mamacita" is a love ode to a woman who may seem promiscuous based on her looks, but is actually a virtuous lady from a conservative background. The song highlights the contradiction that exists between a person's outward appearance and their true identity, and how preconceived notions can lead to misunderstandings. The lyrics reveal that Mamacita is a woman with a "foxy smile," but is raised by the Book and reads on page one - signaling she is a traditional Catholic. The song asserts that Mamacita's cultural background prohibits her from making love for fun and is only allowed after marriage. The singer laments that he is in love with her, and dreams about her "cherry lips that have never been tasted." He dwells on the fact that she is not the type to give her love away, it is reserved for her future husband. The chorus repeats the name "Mamacita," giving it a playful highlight, while asserting her sensuality and sweetness.

@uncleelmer

Dennis Provisor was cool. He looked like a rocker and was a good musician in the Grass Roots.

I have been dying to see this ever since I found out that I missed American Bandstand the week they did it! I was crushed. My favorite group of all time, doing their best single in 3 years on TV, and I missed it! . Now, finally I get to see it! Thank you! BTW, the single was first released with the "she's so sweet you could eat her" line, and it got on a bunch of stations but some stations banned it - a lot of them did. So by the time they were able to get out the reserviced version with the horrible new line, the stations that had been playing it had stopped, but now other stations added it. This resulted in one of the longest times a record stayed on the Billboard charts without hitting the Top 40. Had all the stations that played "Mamacita" been playing it at the same time, this would have resulted in a solid hit for the Grass Roots, which they needed badly. They could have ridden at least a couple more years with a comeback hit that strong. They were, by the way, the only American group that had a lot of hits in the '60s that managed to continue to have major hits straight on through into the '70s. The ONLY one.

Dennis Provisor seems to be so cool and enjoying himself. I had the LP that had Mamacita on it and I thought little of the so-called risque lyric "so sweet you could eat her." It was totally unimportant. I loved "Mamacita" and the LP is actually very good with some good tunes. I don't recall any filler tunes either. If you see it on the internet buy this 1975 Lp release from the Grass Roots. The album also had a good song called "Out in the Open".
