@Dion Its set in an eternal Iron Age like world, where no technology exists. The are humans mentioned who live in the east and south who are differently in looks. I only recall the Haradrim being somewhat Arab inspired.
I agree that these people are not in the spotlight n are mentioned always as being in the service of Sauron, but there's also that element of them being subjugated by sauron, thus not all voluntarily serving him.

I think it was because the mark was small, on the bottom side of the door, which makes it easy to miss if you're not looking for it. Plus, I think there was magic involved. If you watch closely, the mark glows when Gandalf and the dwarves look at. As Dwalin first comes to the door its glowing, but then it stops as his shadow covers it. This reminds me of that door in Moria that only glowed when there was moonlight. So, that would make the mark very easy to miss if it was not glowing and hidden at the bottom of the door.

@J K Not by much. The Old Took, the only Hobbit that naturally had the longest life was only 130, thats not much older than the longest lived human at 119. Consider Hobbits eat healthy, are relatively active and have very little stress, it's not hard to add an extra few years of life to a healthy lifespan.

Well Hobbits are about 1/2 to 2/3 the size of an adult human, so their babies and children would likely be proportional. Now whether they grow at a faster rate to adult size is an unknown. I think the assumption is that since they live a similar lifespan to humans, their offspring would grow as a similar rate.
