It is intended to produce modern folk music that represents modern multiculturalism in the United Kingdom and as such, features musicians from a wide variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The name of the project comes from the 1993 book The Imagined Village by Georgina Boyes.
The project started in 2004 and led to the release of an eponymous album in 2007 on Real World Records. Some of the tracks on the album are modern re-interpretations of traditional folk songs.
While primarily the project of Simon Emmerson, the band includes contributions from: The Copper Family, Sheila Chandra, Benjamin Zephaniah, Martin Carthy, Eliza Carthy, Paul Weller, Transglobal Underground, Tunng, Chris Wood, Billy Bragg, Tiger Moth, The Gloworms and Dhol Foundation.
The Imagined Village E.P. was released earlier in 2007, and is a remix of the album tracks. The 2008 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards voted "Cold, Hailey, Rainy Night" as best traditional track of the year.
In 2009, the project moved to a new record label, ECC Records, and a second album, Empire & Love was released in January 2010. In 2012 they released the album, Bending The Dark.

Wonderful, ground breaking stuff, unfair to pick out anyone for praise, but love Chris Wood's vocals!

At least to this old but not unsophisticated boy's ears, this is genius. I've been listening to unusual music since the early sixties: Jazz, rock, folk, johncage, celtic, world especially Indian and Malian, and the tremulous ways of combining them are my joys. I've been a dj and founder of an alternative radio station going into its 40th year. This is among the most wonderful pieces of music I have ever heard. I'm already over-listening to it. The sitar player does such a fine job. The Celtic voice and this wonderful old English with the almost jazz sitar and accompanying guitars and other stringed instruments, and fine violin and I think cello or bowed bass. Wow. Thanks so much to the original players. This is extraordinarily good, a marriage of Shakti and Planxty. I love it! Thanks to buzz834 and the Camb. F Fest.
PS:I just watched the nex youtube: It is Mratin Carthy! He's a creative individual, isn't he?

When I see people being creative like this I see the divinity of each individual shine through. Existence itself is the elephant in the room ;)

I now have divided loyalty having always loved the Steeleye Span version; but this is superbly atmospheric...
Louise McTigue
Absolutely sublime...cannot fault it... rolls and unfurls, seductively and alluring, it draws you in and envelops you totally! Loved this for years now.
Chris Dansey
Same here. Both versions are sheer magic.
