She Got Arrested
The Interrupters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She got arrested
For shooting down her man
U.S. Marshals
Caught her outside of Spokane
She said: "I'd do it again
Do it again,
Do it again.
I'd do it again
Do it again,
Do it again.
Yeah, I'd do it again"

She met luck a year ago last Christmas
He drove a truck in town on business
She fell in love or so she thought
Cuz Marilyn was cold and the batter was hot so
She moved alone to the city of sin
And got a place with him
Put her chips all in yeah
Got dark, he was a stranger
Put his hands on her in anger

And she got arrested
For shooting down her man
U.S. Marshals
caught her outside of Spokane
She said: "I'd do it again
Do it again
Do it again
I'd do it again
Do it again
Do it again
Do it again
I'd do it again"

They brought her down to the police station
In a eight foot room for interrogation
Her finger prints on the murder weapon
All they needed was damn confession
She was bloody beaten for years
Her demeaner was cold but she cried no tears
This time it was his blood on her
She wore it like a badge of honor

And she got arrested
For shooting down her man
U.S. Marshals
Caught her outside of Spokane
She said: "I'd do it again
Do it again
Do it again
I'd do it again
Do it again
Do it again
Do it again
I'd do it again"

Flight risk, drove a thousand miles
In a cell for a year on trial
No regrets for the things she done
He lost the fight, she won

Tell the story, jury hurry
Deliberated for a verdict
She's up for murder in the first degree
Cuz she refused to plead insanity

And she got arrested
For shooting down her man
U.S. Marshals
Caught her outside of Spokane
She said: "I'd do it again
Do it again
Do it again
I'd do it again
Do it again
Do it again
Do it again
I'd do it again"

"Do it again
Do it again
Do it again
I'd do it again
Yeah, I'd do it again
Do it again, that's right

Do it again
I'd do it again"

Overall Meaning

The Interrupters' song "She Got Arrested" tells the story of a woman who has been physically abused by her partner for years and finally shoots him in self-defense. The song starts with U.S. Marshals arresting the woman outside of Spokane for the shooting, but she boldly admits that she would do it again if given the chance. The song then goes on to narrate how the woman met her abuser, Luck, a year ago last Christmas when he drove a truck in town on business. She fell in love with him and moved with him to Las Vegas but soon realized that things were not as they seemed. Her partner became a stranger, and he started physically abusing her, leaving her bloody and beaten for years. One day in self-defense, she shot and killed him, and now she faces a trial for murder in the first degree.

The Interrupters' "She Got Arrested" tells the plight of millions of women across the world who suffer from domestic abuse. The song's protagonist was driven to a point where she had to take her abuser's life in her hands to save her own. By admitting that she would do it again, the woman is asserting her agency and refusing to be a victim of domestic violence.

@scottcharney1091

I was about to suggest that similar climates (southern California, coastal South Africa, Jamaica to an extent) have something to do with it, but then I remembered that some such bands have come from very different places- New York, and of course, the UK!
