The band drew upon a variety of stylistic influences over the course of their career, including 1960s beat music, soul, rhythm and blues and psychedelic rock, as well as 1970s punk and new wave. The trio was known for its melodic pop songs, its distinctly English flavour and its mod image. The band launched the career of Paul Weller, who went on to form The Style Council and later had a successful solo career. Weller wrote and sang most of The Jam’s original compositions, and he played lead guitar, using a Rickenbacker. Bruce Foxton provided backing vocals and prominent basslines, which were the foundation of many of the band’s songs, including the hits "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight", "The Eton Rifles", "Going Underground" and "Town Called Malice".

I Need You
The Jam Lyrics

I hope you do believe me
I've given you my heart
I love you and you alone were meant for me
Please give your loving heart to me
And say we'll never part
I think of you every morning
Dream of you every night
Whenever you are in sight
I love you for sentimental reasons
I hope you do believe me
I've given you my heart
I love you and you alone were meant for me
Please give your loving heart to me
And say we'll never part
I think of you every morning
Dream of you every night
So darling I am never lonely
Whenever you are in sight
I love you for sentimental reasons
I hope you do believe me
I've given you my heart
The Jam's song "I Need You" is a tender and romantic love song that expresses the strong emotions of a person in love. The lyrics are very clear in their message, stating the strong love the singer has for their significant other, and how they feel like they are meant to be together forever. The singer's plea for their lover to give their heart to them and never leave is both desperate and honest.
The lyrics "I love you for sentimental reasons, I hope you do believe me" are particularly powerful, as they express a deep sense of vulnerability that is often associated with love. The singer is baring their soul and asking their lover to trust them with their heart. The repetition of the phrase "Please give your loving heart to me, and say we'll never part" provides a sense of reassurance, and makes it clear that the singer is committed to making their relationship work.
The use of the words "Darling" and "Whenever you are in sight" convey a sense of warmth and comfort, suggesting that the singer feels safe and secure when they are with their lover. The line "Dream of you every night" highlights the strong emotions that the singer is feeling, and the fact that they are constantly thinking about their lover.
Overall, "I Need You" is a beautiful love song that captures the intense emotions that come with falling in love. It is a heartfelt expression of the desire for a deep and lasting connection with another person.
