We are a thing that came out of a few chance meetings at Sydney University. You see, Heather and Hayley had been playing music together for a while. Inevitably came the journey south from Byron - being their place of youth - to Sydney for a foray into higher education. Nik and Sam were studying at Sydney University also. And you know, for some reason you just meet people...
We don't have a manifesto as such, but we do have definite intentions in what we do. We wish to play pop, but with a recognizable element of self-awareness. We wish to be emotional, but with a sense of certainty that our audiences won't walk away thinking that we take ourselves too seriously. What is paramount is an attempt to push this thing called the culture industry in some direction which makes it more human. (I guess this is all too ambitious but oh well... We do try)
Heather studies piano at the conservatorium and reads a bit too much Russian literature. Hayley looks toward her personal canon of pop ballads for guidance in all situations and believes we must return to the way life was prior to the poker machine epidemic. Nik is a science student who imbues his drumming with formulas and mathematical complexities. Sam is a country music-playing, Marx-spouting communist with a love of all things meaningfully subversive.
The Jezabels have released 3 EPs: Dark Storm (2010), The Man is Dead (2009) and She's So Hard (2009).
Their debut album Prisoner was released in September 2011. The Jezabels won the 2012 ARIA Award for Best Independent Release for their album, Prisoner.

Look Of Love
The Jezabels Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I could take you, in a pickup truck
Luke I'm joking, but I'm talking roughly the truth
My heart's sinking when I see those eyes
And I wonder, what it would be like
And I think of every frickin' chance that I blew
And in the dead of night
In the dead of night
I'm gonna lick it like sugar, Lord
Then I'll choke you, think I'm not that sort?
Well I could be; I could be so happy with you
And are you rolling on by
With the beats up and the window down?
Oh, hey little hone, I'm rolling in line with you
In the dead of night
I could give in to your love
In the dead of night
You love's a spider web
When I shut it out of my mind
You get spinning again
In the dead of night
What a reckoning
Gonna lick it like, like sugar
Shoulda recognised it coming
You got me lit up with the look of love
I could take you, in a pickup truck
I am always, and I'm always happy with you
And in the dead of night
I could give in to your love
We'll get spinning again
The Jezabels’ “Look of Love” is a song about longing for someone and the fear of missed opportunities. The opening lines “you got me lit up with the look of love” suggests the power of a gaze, and how it can spark desire in a person. The singer expresses their willingness to be with the person they desire, even by driving them in a pickup truck, which shows a sense of vulnerability.
As the song progresses, the singer expresses their hesitation to act on their feelings. They express regret "And I think of every frickin' chance that I blew". The line “I’m gonna lick it like sugar, then I’ll choke you” suggests that the singer is considering taking action, but is afraid of the consequences or backlash that might come with it.
The chorus “in the dead of night, I could give in to your love” implies that the singer may give in to their desires if they could summon the courage. Finally, the line “what a reckoning” may suggest that the singer is starting to realize that they may have missed their chance with the person they desire.

You got me lit up with a look of love
I could take you in a pick up truck
Like I'm choking
But I'm talking rough literature
And are you rolling about with the big son
And mowing them down
Hey little honey,
I'm rolling in line with you
In the dead of night
I can't give in to your love
In the dead of the night
Your love's so staggering
That I'll shut it out of my mind
You get spinning again
Oh, get spinning again
I'll get spinning again
In the dead of night I'll look
Oh the reckoning of all
Gonna lick it like that sugar
Should I recognize it calls me?
Got me lit up with a look of love
I could take you in a pick up truck
I am always
When I'm always hurting with you
In the dead of night
I can't give in to your love
We'll get spinning again
Oh, get spinning again
We'll get spinning again
Oh, get spinning again
We'll get spinning again

It's a shame the mainstream radio plays absolute garbage these days. And not enough creativity like you guys. I'm a metal, hardcore, punk listener. And all the way down to instrumental bands. I've heard of you guys but never explored your band. Glad I did. Good stuff ✌️

Australian music never ceases to amaze me!

Hey guys!! :-D I went for your gig two years back at Home Club and i was really blown away by the energy of the band, and also how powerful the band sounds while performing live. I'm so super psyched to see all of you again tomorrow at Laneway!!! Say, do you guys prefer playing at festivals or at smaller venues?
The Jezabels
we love playing in Singapore and are so pumped to be playing tomorrow for you guys. Festivals are pretty great. The atmosphere is always very intense and exciting, so it should be grand

My God, I have no idea how I missed the release of this album by over a year. I suppose I've been perpetually caught up in the EPs and Prisoner. This song is absolutely amazing, and The Brink is in regular rotation now. Thank you all for creating such amazing music.

It's so sad that talented artists like them don't have the appreciation and support that they deserve. This present world is so fucked up. 😥 They are one of the very few musicians from present days that I enjoy many songs.
