Formed in 1963 in Muswell Hill, North London, they first gained prominence on the heels of the well-received and highly influential single "You Really Got Me" (1964). The group originally consisted of lead singer/guitarist Ray Davies, his brother lead guitarist Dave Davies, drummer Mick Avory, and bassist Pete Quaife. Quaife left (twice) in the late 1960s, and Avory finally left in 1984 as the result of a long-running dispute with Dave Davies, leaving only the Davies brothers as the core of the original group.
With Ray Davies' songwriting skills and unabashedly English voices, Dave Davies' impressive guitar work, and Avory's tight and steady drumming, the band became one of the best and most influential groups of British pop and the "British Invasion" of the U.S.A., lasting longer than any of their competitors, apart from the Rolling Stones, as they broke up in 1996. Their catalogue of songs has been covered by Van Halen, The Pretenders, The Black Keys, The Stranglers, Queens of the Stone Age , and many more.

Berkeley Mews
The Kinks Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
In Berkeley Mews I first met you,
I staggered through your chilly dining room,
In Berkeley Mews I first met you.
Your kitchen sink was cluttered up,
So I couldn't shut her?? Up forlornly??
I brewed another cuppa up
I thought you had much better things to do,
In Berkeley Mews I first met you,
You drowned my conversation with champagne,
And Berkeley Mews was not the same.
I thought you were an intellect,
But now that I reflect, you left me reeling.
You made me drink a toast
And when you finished I was looking at the ceiling.
The flood of tears I've wept thinking of you,
Remind me of that night in Berkeley Mews.
You know that you left me broken hearted,
Berkeley Mews.
The Kinks' "Berkeley Mews" is a nostalgic song about the memories of first love. As the leaves of brown are falling through the view, the singer recounts meeting someone special in Berkeley Mews. The chilly dining room is mentioned as well, indicating some discomfort at first. As they try to head out early, they are interrupted by a cluttered kitchen sink and another cup of tea. The singer reflects that the person they met seemed like an intellect, but left them reeling with their witty conversation.
As the night continues, champagne is popped and the conversation flows. The singer is left in awe of this person, but as time moves on, they become heartbroken over the memory. The tears shed are a reminder of that special night in Berkeley Mews that will never be forgotten.
Overall, "Berkeley Mews" is a song about the magic and heartache of first love, and how one special night can be imprinted in our memories forever.
