The Kooks formed at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music, where they were all students. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist Luke Pritchard, got bassist Max Rafferty involved in a college project, which formed the base of the band. After getting lead guitarist Hugh Harris and drummer Paul Garred involved, they took their name from the song Kooks on the 1971 David Bowie album Hunky Dory. When they tried to trademark the name, they found that in the late/mid 1990s a Swedish band by the same name released an album in Sweden called Too Much is Not Enough.
The Kooks released a debut EP and played gigs around Brighton, where they were based at the time. They were signed to Virgin Records.

Do You Love Her

To take my soul away from me
'Cause when I see you
You rip my heart out
But all the same you're not to blame
Baby baby I love you still
But I need your heart beating next to my heart
I need your heart beating next to my heart
In love I am
Do you remember how I met you child
I was down and I fell for you completely
When I wanted your heart and
You didn't want me now you did
But now you did
I need your heart beating next to my heart
In love I am
I need your heart dancing next to my heart
In love I am
Baby do you love me still
'Cause I miss you
I miss you
Baby, I miss you
The lyrics of The Kooks's song Do You Love Her reflect the singer's intense love for someone who has previously broken their heart. They begin by confessing that they have recently thought their love interest had returned to take their soul away from them. This imagery highlights the all-consuming nature of their feelings for this person. While the sight of this person rips their heart out, they acknowledge that they are not to blame for their emotions. Despite the pain they experience, the singer declares their love for this person and says they still need them to be close to them.
The chorus repeats the idea that the singer needs this person's heart beating next to their own heart, emphasizing the intensity of their desire for emotional intimacy. The second verse provides further background information by recalling how the singer first met this person and fell for them completely. They had wanted this person's heart in return, but initially, the feeling was not mutual. Now, however, things have changed, and the other person does want them. The repeated chorus further highlights the importance of emotional closeness in this relationship. The song ends with the singer asking if this person still loves them and expressing how much they miss them.
Overall, the lyrics of Do You Love Her are a plea for emotional connection and highlight the all-consuming nature of love. It is a raw and vulnerable representation of the pain and yearning that can come with loving someone who has previously hurt you.
