The Kooks formed at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music, where they were all students. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist Luke Pritchard, got bassist Max Rafferty involved in a college project, which formed the base of the band. After getting lead guitarist Hugh Harris and drummer Paul Garred involved, they took their name from the song Kooks on the 1971 David Bowie album Hunky Dory. When they tried to trademark the name, they found that in the late/mid 1990s a Swedish band by the same name released an album in Sweden called Too Much is Not Enough.
The Kooks released a debut EP and played gigs around Brighton, where they were based at the time. They were signed to Virgin Records.

To fight the feeling that is growing in my mind
I know I did us both all so wrong
I know I'm not always all that strong
A-B-C-D-E-F and g
Oh that reminds me of when we were free
Before life began to tear us apart
We were lovers in every way
Left school together, went back to my place
Now I can hardly remember her face
Before I met her I was, sad
And can I hold you one last time
To fight this feeling that is growing in my mind
The Kooks' "One Last Time" is a nostalgic and regretful song about a failed relationship. The singer is asking for one more chance to hold the person he loves to try and push away the growing feeling of regret and longing that he has been harboring. The song is filled with imagery that reflects a past filled with love and good times, but also mistakes and sadness.
The first verse expresses the singer's desire to hold onto the memories of his past relationship. He acknowledges that he made mistakes that hurt both him and his partner. The line "I know I'm not always all that strong" could be interpreted as the singer admitting his weakness while reflecting on how his past actions have affected the present. The second half of the verse reflects on a time when life was simpler and free from the troubles that they face now. The alphabet references in the line "A-B-C-D-E-F and g" hint at childhood innocence and simplicity, juxtaposed with the current struggle and heartbreak.
The second verse paints a vivid picture of the relationship that the singer had with his partner. They were young and in love, leaving school together and spending time at his place. However, the line "now I can hardly remember her face" shows that time has passed and the relationship has ended, leaving behind only bittersweet memories. The final plea to hold his partner one last time shows that the singer is still in love and longing for what could have been.
