The Kooks formed at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music, where they were all students. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist Luke Pritchard, got bassist Max Rafferty involved in a college project, which formed the base of the band. After getting lead guitarist Hugh Harris and drummer Paul Garred involved, they took their name from the song Kooks on the 1971 David Bowie album Hunky Dory. When they tried to trademark the name, they found that in the late/mid 1990s a Swedish band by the same name released an album in Sweden called Too Much is Not Enough.
The Kooks released a debut EP and played gigs around Brighton, where they were based at the time. They were signed to Virgin Records.

Like theres nothing in the world that isn't mine
And I could have it all
Maybe I should have it all
I'll take you out of your life
Just the one sweet night
And you could take it all
Oh, maybe I could rip it off
With you and me we can only lose
Just don't fight me off
And I won't write you off
Take me in and then you push me out
Fall all over yourself tonight
And just don't let it go, without a fight
Take me in and then you push me out
Fall all over yourself tonight
And just don't let it go, let it go
So here I am again
Singing songs about the summer
'Cause that's when you and me
When we came to be
I brought you home to my guitar
And told you how sweet you really are
'Cause you know what's on my mind
Is you getting all this time
It's easy to pick and choose
With you and me we can only lose
Just don't find me out
And I won't fight you off
Take me in and then you push me out
Fall all over yourself tonight
And just don't let it go, let it go
Oh no no, another girl, no no
Don't fight me off little girl
The Kooks’s song "Pull Me In" is a love song that talks about being fully involved in a romantic relationship. The singer has a feeling that they can have everything they desire in the world, but what they truly want is the person they love. They suggest that they can take their partner out of their current life and experience something new together. The line "Maybe I should have it all" shows that the singer realizes that the material things in life are not as important as having the person they love.
The singer sings about singing songs about the summer, which was when their relationship began. They brought their partner home and sweetly told them how they felt. The chorus of the song communicates the push and pull of their relationship. The singer wants their partner to be fully committed to them, but their partner seems to push them away. The line "Take me in and then you push me out" portrays the idea that the partner seems to want to be in the relationship but is afraid of commitment. The singer pleads with their partner to not let the relationship go without a fight, and the repetition of "let it go" emphasizes the importance of fighting for what they care for.
Overall, "Pull Me In" by The Kooks is a song about the push and pull of a romantic relationship, where one partner is fully committed, and the other partner seems to be hesitant about commitment. The song captures the emotions of the singer as they plead with their partner to make a choice and not let the relationship end.
