The Kooks formed at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music, where they were all students. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist Luke Pritchard, got bassist Max Rafferty involved in a college project, which formed the base of the band. After getting lead guitarist Hugh Harris and drummer Paul Garred involved, they took their name from the song Kooks on the 1971 David Bowie album Hunky Dory. When they tried to trademark the name, they found that in the late/mid 1990s a Swedish band by the same name released an album in Sweden called Too Much is Not Enough.
The Kooks released a debut EP and played gigs around Brighton, where they were based at the time. They were signed to Virgin Records.

On my way to see you again
'Cause we've been honest late, so got down low
It's hard to see it has an end
Oh, it does have an ending
But I'm so vicious, dear, to you
Although, you never give me problems
In my head, so many questions
Won't you go? Don't be my slave, girl
I wouldn't have it that way
You're so kind, I’m out of my mind here
This I do, girl
I do, I want, to go to Chelsea
Oh, just to talk and, feel you
'Cause you've been hiding, oh you've been hiding out
But I'm coming back there to get you
Yes, I'm coming to get you
But I'm so vicious, dear, to you
Although, you never give me problems
You're so kind, so on to me
In my head, so many questions
Won't you go? Don't be my slave, girl
I wouldn't have it that way
You're so kind, I’m out of my mind here
(Settled down now) I can't get
Well, I'm coming back there to get you
Oh, I'm coming to get you
But I'm so vicious, dear, to you
Although, you never give me problems
You're so kind, so on to me
In my head, so many questions
Won't you go? Don't be my slave, girl
I wouldn't have it that way
You're so kind, I’m out of my mind here
The lyrics to The Kooks' song "Vicious" seem to be a reflection on a complicated and tumultuous relationship. The first verse expresses the singer's thoughts and anxieties surrounding this relationship. They seem to be involved in something "underground" or secretive, as they mention being on their way to see someone again. It's unclear what makes the situation complicated, but the singer acknowledges that it's hard to imagine it ending. However, it's clear that there is an ending, and the rest of the song seems to explore the emotions surrounding this impending separation.
The second verse is where the song takes on a more emotional tone. The singer acknowledges that the other person has never given them any problems, but they themselves are "vicious." They seem to be wrestling with their own emotions and the way they are treating the other person. The chorus repeats the sentiment that the other person is kind to them, but there are still many questions and uncertainties in the singer's mind. They address the other person as "slave girl," implying that they may feel possessive over them or want them to conform to their expectations.
Overall, the song seems to express a sense of conflict and inner turmoil. The singer is struggling with their own emotions and the way they are treating the other person, but they also acknowledge that the other person is kind and has not given them any reason to be "vicious." It's a complex portrayal of a difficult relationship.
