The Longest Johns are a British folk musical group from Bristol, England, consisting of Andy Yates, Dave Robinson, Jonathan "JD" Darley, and Robbie Sattin. They are known for performing folk music and sea shanties in the English tradition, and they also compose and record their own music. They gained popularity from their rendition of the 1800s folk song "Wellerman", which went viral on TikTok in early 2021.

The Longest Johns formed in June 2012 after first singing together at a friend's barbecue. The original line up consisted of Josh Bowker, Andy Yates, Jonathan Darley and Dave Robinson. About a week later, they posted their first video on YouTube, singing "Haul Away Joe." They released their debut EP, Bones in the Ocean, in 2013, the title track of which is still one of their most popular. Their first full album, Written in Salt, was released in 2016, featuring tracks such as Drunken Sailor, Old Maui and Randy Dandy-O.

In June 2018 they released their second album, Between Wind & Water, which contained the smash hit "Wellerman". This recording, as well as the one used in the bands' Sea of Thieves series "Open Crewsing" would go on to cause the viral sensation in the years to come.

In March 2020, they released a song titled "Flatten the Curve", urging people to stay indoors during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In June 2020, the band released their third studio album, Cures What Ails Ya. This album was the Johns' first album featuring a full array of instruments on half of the songs.

@Kyle Read it was not a sea shanty it was a poem made by Egil Skallagrimsson. As far as sea shanties go they definitely had them but didn't record them because they weren't deemed important enough when weighed next to the skaldic epics and long poems which recorded Nordic history which were deemed far more important. Also most sagas were written in the 12th and 13th century AD so alot of stuff from the viking age had already begun dying out and the only thing that really survived were the poetic epics which had stories important enough to keep getting told.

TL:DR - The only semblance we realistically have of Norse age music is skaldic poetry written in the sagas and alot of it might be made up. We know mælti min møder was written by Egil Skallagrimsson so it was neither a sea shanty, nor written in the viking age. That being said I do like alot of the arrangements people have come up with.

That would give you an idea of what a viking shanty would sound like.

I only have one thing to say, you guys are really talented keep up the wonderful work :-) I dabble in music myself I've been singing since I was just 2 years old, see I was born with a multitude of disabilities such as hydrocephalus and LMC as well as multiple sclerosis and the doctors told me that I was not supposed to make it to the age of two years old and look at me now! Take that medical books ever since then I've been sharing my many talents with the world and continuing to do so for many more years to come :-)
