A.M. RADIO
The Lumineers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Standin' on the corner, I could listen to the radio
When the savior sang from the fire escape on the second floor
You were always saying we would make it to the catacombs
In the end, it came when you wrote my name on the bathroom stall

If the photograph doesn't bring you back
If the final chapter isn't ever after
Ooh

I remember wakin' up the neighbor like a stadium
Yeah, you ran upstairs, screamin' no one cared and the band played on
Even in the limo, you were feelin' like an animal
At the traffic light, when you blew your mind on a mobile phone?

Day and night, my love
You said the blood was on my hands

Long, as you run
I couldn't give you up
Forever run
I couldn't give you up

In the minivan, with your headphones in
Did you write your letters to your shitty friends?
And all this time, you said to me
"My love would never die"

Long, as you run
I couldn't give you up
Forever run
I couldn't give you up (and the daylight in my hand)
Long, as you run (and the silence on the street)
I couldn't give you up (and the long light in my hand)
Forever run (and I was incomplete)
I couldn't give you up (and the daylight in my hand)
Long, as you run (and the silence on the street)
I couldn't give you up (and the long light in my hand)

Gone, don't look back (and I was incomplete)
I couldn't give you up

Overall Meaning

The Lumineers' song "A.M. Radio" is a nostalgic ballad that tells the story of a lost love and the memories associated with it. The first verse paints a picture of a person standing on a street corner, listening to the radio when a song comes on that reminds them of their past love. The second line refers to a memory of the savior singing from a fire escape on the second floor, perhaps suggesting that the love interest was a savior to the singer in some way. The third line mentions a promise to make it to the catacombs, which could symbolize the depths of the relationship, while the final line of the verse describes the love interest writing the singer's name on a bathroom stall, indicating their commitment.

The chorus speaks to the idea that memories and photographs may not be enough to bring someone back or create the perfect ending. Perhaps the relationship ended badly or tragically.

The second verse mentions waking up a neighbor with loud music, while the love interest runs upstairs to sing and dance with the singer. The line "even in the limo, you were feeling like an animal" suggests wild behavior and impulsivity in the relationship, while the reference to blowing the mind on a mobile phone at a traffic light could indicate a fight or argument. The pre-chorus mentions the love interest saying that the blood was on the singer's hands, likely meaning that the love interest blamed them for the problems in the relationship.

Overall, "A.M. Radio" is a complex and emotional song that conveys the highs and lows of a passionate relationship that has ended.

I lost the girl I thought I was going to marry in a tragic accident seven years ago this last August (has it really been that long?) She had a very kind heart, the kindest heart, and an incredible talent for music. I will never forget picking the chords for Rex's Blues while she sang, her voice, the honey gold light streaming in the window, I can't separate the senses in my memory now.

She also danced ballet, so this video was profoundly touching to me. It's a sunny Tuesday afternoon with honey gold light streaming in my window and I broke down the moment I saw those slippers.

I don't really know why I'm writing this.

I miss you very much Angie.

Chained upon the face of time
Feelin' full of foolish rhyme
Ain't no dark til something shines
I'm bound to leave this dark behind

May you overcome the best way possible if you still haven't. That way which we get to be put when our minds transport us into that moment, those scenes... man.
My best vibes are sent.

"Slow it down, Angie come back to bed
Rest your arms, and rest your legs
Don't you frown when you're feelin' like that
Only love can dig you out of this"
