BIRTHDAY
The Lumineers Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Your eyes were blue
I don't know why I couldn't love myself
But you needed proof
You and me will always be the ones to hang around
I can see the loneliness you keep out of sight
It's your birthday, dear
It's alright, it's alright, and we're carrying on
And you know, and you know, and you know
It's your birthday, oh
Every word, every word
And we're singing along
Over and over
I can only scream so loud, but you ignored me
You picked it up, you picked it all apart
And, now, there's nothing for me
We gather 'round
Your house burned down
As you held a garden hose
You and me, will always be the ones to hang around
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
It's your birthday, dear (it's alright)
It's alright, it's okay, and we're carrying on
And you know, and you know, and you know
It's your birthday (it's alright))
Every word, every word
And we're singing along
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
It's your birthday, dear
It's alright, it's okay, And we're singing along
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
It's your birthday, dear (it's alright)
It's alright, it's okay, and we're carrying on (it's alright)
And you know, and you know, and you know
It's your birthday (it's alright)
Every word, every word
And we're singing along
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
It's your birthday, dear (it's alright)
It's alright, it's okay, and we're carrying on (it's alright)
And you know, and you know, and you know
It's your birthday (it's alright)
Every word, every word
And we're singing along
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
It's your birthday, dear (it's alright)
It's alright, it's okay, and we're carrying on (it's alright)
And you know, and you know, and you know
It's your birthday
The lyrics of The Lumineers' song "Birthday" convey a sense of emotional turmoil and self-doubt within a relationship. The singer initially expresses surprise at being the sole focus of the other person's attention, symbolized by the mention of their blue eyes. However, the singer admits to struggling with self-love and feeling the need to provide proof of their worthiness to their partner. This suggests a lack of confidence and a fear of not being enough for their significant other.
Despite these insecurities, the singer acknowledges the enduring bond between them, referencing their constant presence and understanding of each other's loneliness. This suggests that despite their internal struggles, they find solace in each other's company. The lyrics also depict a moment of crisis, which is symbolized by a burning house and the image of the partner holding a garden hose. This image reveals the partner's attempt to maintain control and stability amidst chaos, while the singer remains by their side.
The chorus repeats the phrases "It's alright, it's alright, it's alright" and "It's your birthday, dear," almost like a mantra. These repetitions serve as a reassurance that despite the hardships and uncertainties, they will persevere and celebrate together. The act of singing along signifies a unifying experience, suggesting that through their shared struggles, they find strength and support in each other.
