WHERE WE ARE
The Lumineers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Where we are (where we are)
I don't know where we are (where we are)
But it will be okay
Where we are (where we are)
I don't know where we are (where we are)
But it will be okay

Laying on a table like I wasn't even there
Holding on a steering wheel and coming up for air
What was that?
Driving in the rain, what was that?
Calling out your name

Staring at the ceiling fan, I'm feeling far away
Leaning on the reasons like it wasn't even fair
What was that?
Driving in the rain, what was that?
Calling out your name

Where we are
I don't know where we are, but it will be okay
Where we are
I don't know where we are, but it will be okay

Crashed the car in Arizona on the interstate
People pulling over, crying, thinking we were dead
What was that?
Driving in the rain, what was that?
Calling out your name

I know who you wanted me to be
Always holding up your tragedy

Where we are
I don't know where we are, but it will be okay
Where we are (where we are)
I don't know where we are (where we are)
But it will be okay
Where we are (where we are)
I don't know where we are (where we are)
But it will be okay
Where we are (where we are)
I don't know where we are (where we are)
But it will be okay
Where we are (where we are)
I don't know where we are (where we are)
But it will be okay (okay)
Where we are (where we are)
I don't know where we are (where we are)
But it will be okay

Where we are
I don't know where we are, but it will be okay

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Where We Are" by The Lumineers capture a sense of uncertainty and disorientation. The repeated phrase "Where we are, I don't know where we are, but it will be okay" suggests a feeling of being lost, both literally and metaphorically. The singer seems to be in a state of confusion, unsure of their physical location and also grappling with their emotional state.

The song opens with the image of the singer lying on a table, as if they are unnoticed or invisible. This could symbolize a feeling of detachment or being overlooked in their surroundings. They go on to mention holding onto a steering wheel and coming up for air, which could represent a desire for control or a need to take a breath in the midst of chaos.

The mention of driving in the rain and calling out a name adds to the theme of uncertainty. It seems as though the singer is searching for someone or something, but they are not sure what they are looking for or where to find it. They mention staring at a ceiling fan and feeling far away, which could indicate a mental or emotional distance from their current reality.

The verse about crashing the car in Arizona on the interstate adds a moment of danger and heightened emotion to the story. The scene of people pulling over and crying, thinking the singer and someone else were dead, emphasizes the unpredictability and fragility of life.

The final lines of the song provide some insight into the dynamics of a relationship. The singer acknowledges that they know who the other person wanted them to be, always holding up their tragedy. This suggests a codependent or unhealthy dynamic where the singer feels the pressure to fulfill someone else's expectations and carry their burdens.

Overall, "Where We Are" explores themes of uncertainty, emotional disconnection, and the search for a sense of belonging. It touches upon the complexities of relationships and the challenges of navigating life's unexpected twists and turns.

The video is actually directly referencing the near death car crash Wesley Schultz (lead singer) and his girlfriend had. The video where in the actors playing the couple are shown are portrayed in that very moment in which they are experiencing the crash. (Hence the universe shots at the start) Hence they are seen to face each other but more importantly seen surrounded by the car parts. And thus the lyrics 'Where we are? I don't know where we are, but it'll be okay '
And lastly they get up from thier chairs and embrace each other, as if to show that final I'll always love you before the moment is over and they experience the impact of the crash.
However thankfully Wesley survived and here he is with a masterpiece.❤️
