I did 2 years of Bushido Karate when i was 18 (im 40 now), and I took a few Krav Maga classes but had to cancel due to scheduling conflicts.
At my age and place in life, I want to get active again. Weight lifting and learn a self defense skill.
I won't do karate, because IMO karate is like a dance, in order for it to be effective your opponent must also do the dance.
I know this makes sense to atleast some of you.

I want to take Krav Maga, but ultimately, and perhaps in parallel with OR to start altogether, I'd like to learn Aikido, and also get training in ground defense, which is where mostly all fights end up.

I chose Aikido because I do whatever it takes to avoid a fight and violence. I will never throw the first punch, and ive come to learn of myself that I react best when responding to someone coming at me.
To be honest, other than a wicked round house, and basic choke hold, I dont know much of anything useful.

BUT here is my reason for writing this. Obviously I appreciate every clip showing training videos and tips etc, but I have still yet to see the most realistic of all, and a technique on how to disable the threat. .. and that is; just about what all people with no skills at all do, ESPECIALLY drunk dudes hyped up on 10 too many shots of honey whiskey and are feeling invincible.... you have two kinds.
1. They get right up in your face, chest out, face so cloae you can smell his breathe, his arms wide and flailing all gangsta like....
This I have seen videos on handling such a punk, but id like to see more, so please show me.
And 2. This is MY biggest question... so, it's great to know these moves but it seems they need to be based on the aggressor giving up his arm/hand, or standing still... but what do you do when you're at a bar and some dude bigger than you and piss drunk just goes off on you and starts throwing haymakers, one after the other AND bum rushing you. Hes flailing his arms around like a damn pin wheel but there is power behind them, and hes rushing you and weighs atleast 50lbs or more than you do, snd hes a thick and solid guy.

I really like the fact that the trainer tells them to protect the aggressor against severe head injuries. It is one thing to defend your-self but another to kill or paralyse another human being, EVEN if he or she attacks you. This distinguishes you from the aggressor and should be the reason why you should learn how to fight.

This is great when you know where the actions are coming from. I've been in combat sports and in a fight you can't tell your opponent which way to attack from. That being said, Krav Maga is a VERY effective martial art.

There are a few videos out there of bad guys attacking someone with some training, and they are ugly. The trained guy obliterates the attacker. As others have said. many of these attackers have one move, or no moves, or are drunk. Not to say that they are not dangerous, but avoidance and a bit of training can go a long way toward keeping you and your loved ones safe(r). Another reason I avoid the "bar scene" - too risky these days, and I don't get drunk.

All martial arts (some exceptions) are effective when you train and actually been in a fight or two (not tournaments). You learn very quickly what you are in a real fight, win, lose, gun, gangs, or cops. These days, depending on where you live, you're not fighting one person, unarmed. Such a world we live in these days. Ugh... I love this instructor and his lessons. Awesome teacher and love his explanations. It's amazing how reality and training differ. I've actually had this happen, but in reality it was a friend and I wasn't expecting the situation to escalate so quickly. And unlike the video if someone is going to push you the distance is much much closer. No one does a run and push unless they really have no intention on actually engaging. The combination of timing and speed coordination to pull this off against someone who's been in a few most people just don't have. I think training seminars should come with a 'this is under optimal conditions' set up before passing it off as techniques that can work just because you've taken a few classes.

Brown belt in Karate myself but I always found it less than real-life helpful that when practicing and demonstrating that someone would throw a half hearted punch and then freeze at their extension so you could do your thing. I doubt anyone in real life would just stand there, arms extended, and let you do your thing after throwing their punch. Of course, in class, you don't want to hurt one another and your learinng technique, but this is how most martial arts classes go I think and you have to start somewhere. Of course, I expect a lot of criticism over my view point. Fine, this is how I saw it.

Muay Thai and BJJ are so successful because a) they're effective and efficient, and b) you actually do the moves when you train.. All this step here, pull this nostril with your left thumb, poke this eye with your big toe while biting this ear and headbutting his balls while keeping side control all within a split second bullshit is just that, bullshit.. Every krav maga nut I've sparred with were clueless, except for the ones with experience in another full contact sport like boxing, kickboxing or some form of grappling - which means what exactly? As a first strike pushing is not the ideal opener, you just give your opponent a better chance at striking you down. Pushing as an opening move happens more often with drunk people or inexperienced fighters. The guy's attack at 0:47 can be countered this way and can be effective, but there are easier moves to deal with it. This move also has its risk as the pivot he does at 1:20 can be dangerous as a defender because if the attacker slows down you will pretty expose your dead zone to your opponent.

One thing I'd like to see more of with these technique videos is having the aggressor try to compensate like in real life instead of just letting it happen. I'm not saying it won't work IRL, but IRL the if he already has contact with your chest, the opponent won't just keep going past you when you side step.

Krav Maga tends to work best as what I like to call and "overlay art". On its own its a bit hard for it to be really effective as an art because the training methods and drills aren't super practical. But Krav draws a lot of its techniques from muay thai, judo, jiu-jitsu, Sambo and other arts. If you cross trained in them and learned how to apply them in sparring, translating it to Krav is pretty easy and helps you understand how to make the techniques more "street ready" (i.e. Thai knee to the groin, or throw on the head). You already learned how to apply the techniques under pressure from randori, playing, or rolling, so you know how to look past the slow drills and get to the heart of the technique.

Compared to other Krav Maga stuff Ive seen this looks pretty realistic though. But in order to pull that one off you have to stay completely calm and have it down like this instructor does. But I think even able to avoid certain things is not a bad thing anyway.

This moove looks very very similar to "IRIMI NAGE" in Aïkido (as it was in the begining). A speedy avoidance and "entry" into the attack, with neck control and throw. My favorite moove.

About ''double push'' use Savate's kick, just a side kick on kneecap or in the midle of thight to block, in same time, hip and knee joints. When you use the french savate's kick you must to bench over back to esquive the attack. Protect your face with your front elbow and stretch well your opposite arm, like fencing.
Second phase, depending on if the right or left leg of your opponent in front and your kicking and the configuration of street situation (but in real it's very fast and brutal actions), you move aside and kick again always hands up.

Get out of the geometric straight line of an opponent's attack , don't "be there" . Redirect and keep moving . Always have a smile on your face which seriously messes with your opponents mind .

In the second defense with the hands it is valid against a professional who practices boxing, but in a street fight I see it difficult because on the street the opponent having no technique does not hit direct there is that type of fast rolling hook punch like when swimming (difficult to explain I have no idea what this attack is called) that it is very difficult to counterattack

A massive guy tried to push me in a club and I did something similar, and pinned him against a wall. He was shocked, but then literally picked me up and threw me, but I rolled backwards and stood up, and it had given time for bouncers to grab him. People said it looked amazing, but I was probably lucky it didn't last much longer. (Ps, was aikido I had trained, but similar principles to here)

@ Jolly All a red belt means is you can just about walk around the Dojang without falling over. There is some great self defence in TaeKwonDo , but also a lot of useless stuff . You just have to train long enough to filter it out . Same with Aikido and Karate . It isn`t just about knowing where to twist the arm , or where to headbutt . You have to condition your reflexes and your attitude . I know plenty of "Black belts" who couldn`t beat up their grandma , because they are solely concerned with learning modules to pass gradings . I also know some deadly ones. These are the guys who have looked a little more deeply into the roots of the art. The guys who just show up twice a week , pay their fees and go home at the end of an hours training are just paying the instructors mortgage. You have to get involved . Look around at lots of martial arts , and be open minded is my advice. Sensei ILZ 5thDAN

Only with regular training you can pull this stuff off, obviously. And even then it's hard. Not because of your technique but because of your mental state. Only through training and sparring/matches you learn how to react appropriately.

Imagine being caught off guard, or you're drunk or you're attacked from behind for no reason like I was once. Videos like these are great but dont rely on them unless you're being trained by someone.

I think that's what KM is all about, strike first, strike hard, so hard that hopefully it's the end of the fight, if not repeat it, in any case a real fight lasts less than 60 seconds max, being the first to strike usually helps.

Very effective martial art, in particular if you already have another discipline as your foundation. E.g. Muay Thai, Karate, Boxing, BJJ. You will be one dangerous individual if you add effective Krav maga to your arsenal.

When he was saying push your opponent to gain confidence I laughed a little. Only because I remember I was in a fight in middle school where the guy pushed me in the chest as hard as he could and HE flew back. Then, while my hands were still down, he landed a punch at my cheek and I hardly moved. Then he ran the other way. He didn't have much confidence after that! lol

If you get a good opening, opportunity, one can push the enemy's head to the point it can kill him/her. With some you will need a good strength, force, as they have their back of their head very fat or had muscled, depends on their anatomy, but in any case, with enough force and a good opening, you can kill them with one single push. They will suffer, that's true, until they die, their whole body can twist and turn like a headless chicken. Literally you're fracturing part of their spine.
That's why when keeping your guard on, your chin stays in your chest.
The calmer you stay, the better you can see their movement. They usually get lost in range, start throwing frenetically punches, in those moments, if you keep your calmness and your guard on properly, you can have a good predicament. They will get tired also, most don't know how to preserve their energy, unless are professional fighters, and have a good mentality. You see, a wise professional fighter won't look for fights out of nowhere .
