Last Train to Clarksville
The Monkees Lyrics
Take the last train to Clarksville
And I'll meet you at the station
You can be there by four-thirty
'Cause I've made your reservation, don't be slow
Oh, no, no, no
Oh, no, no, no
'Cause I'm leaving in the morning
And I must see you again
We'll have one more night together
Oh, no, no, no
Oh, no, no, no
And I don't know if I'm ever coming home
Take the last train to Clarksville
I'll be waiting at the station
We'll have time for coffee-flavored kisses
And a bit of conversation
Oh, no, no, no
Oh, no, no, no
Take the last train to Clarksville
Now I must hang up the phone
I can't hear you in this noisy railroad station all alone
I'm feeling low
Oh, no, no, no
Oh, no, no, no
And I don't know if I'm ever coming home
Oh
Take the last train to Clarksville
And I'll meet you at the station
You can be here by four-thirty
'Cause I've made your reservation, don't be slow
Oh, no, no, no
Oh, no, no, no
And I don't know if I'm ever coming home
Take the last train to Clarksville
Take the last train to Clarksville
Take the last train to Clarksville
Take the last train to Clarksville

According to the song's authors, Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, the song is their protest of the Vietnam War and tells the story of a young man who has been drafted. He is waiting for the train that will take him to an army base, and he knows he may die in Vietnam. At the end of the song he states, "I don't know if I'm ever coming home." Like many early Monkees songs, Micky Dolenz is the only member of the group to actually appear on the record, though later Monkees recordings would feature more "true" group input.

This "Take The Last Train to Clarksville Song" takes me back to the last half of my 6th Grade year and the first half of my 7th Grade Year at College Community Schools in South West Cedar Rapids, Iowa ! I remember in the "Summer of 1966" going down to the "A - Frame Cabin" on the weekends to fish, jump on the "Next Door Neighbor's Trampoline" , mow the lawn at the Cabin, & do a little Hunting in the Fall & Wintertime, and a little "Ice Skating on the Wapsi River"! The Cabin was located in Northeastern Linn County, 3 or 4 miles South East of Waubeek and South and West of the Wapsi River ! We used to have our "Transistor Radio" tuned to either (KCRG 1600 AM), or 1450 KLWW AM, and blast out this "Last Train to Clarksville" tune "as loud as Mom & Dad could stand it" while we were jumping on "Johnson's Trampoline", which was located up River just 1 lot from our A-Frame Cabin ! Mom, Dad, Brother Mark, & Yours Truly would usually get into John Boat by 6:30 in the Morning to motor out on "The Old Wapsi" to catch Catfish, Blue Gill, Carpenters, Bass, Red Horse, Sucker, & an occasional Northern Pike. Our Bait would usually include "Chicken Liver", Crawdads, "Night Crawlers", Minnows, & "Stink Bait" ! We would fish until about 1:30, then motor back to the Cabin for "Mom's lunch". Dad would be still be working on Construction of the Cabin, & Mark and I would get ready to go swimming off of the "Sand Bar" located Upstream near the Hansen's and Wilkinson's Cabin ! Once, I remember nailing Shingles on the side of the A-Frame Cabin ! Lyndon Johnson was U.S. President, Bourke Hickenlooper and Jack Miller were Iowa's U.S. Senators. Harold Highes was Iowa Governor, Ray Nagel was Iowa Football Coach, and Ralph Miller was Iowa Men's Basketball Coach. Clay Stapleton was the Iowa State Football Coach. In Cedar Rapids, Leaders were planning for a new "Cedar Valley 4 lane Expressway" and trying to secure both State and Federal funding to pay for it. In 1966, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, Righteous Brothers, The Monkees, Johnny Rivers, The Supremes, The Association, Sonny & Cher were all the Rage ! The Vietnam War was entering the 3rd Year of U.S. involvement. "The Last Train to Clarksville" Song told about a prospective Draftee, who was concerned that he might not make it home from Vietnam, if he was sent there to fight !!
