Typically, a live performance will begin very quietly with one of the musicians playing something very simple. One by one, the other two will join with their own melodies, all three independent yet intertwined. A piece of music usually lasts about 45 minutes and over this time grows in volume and pace and complexity before petering out. They are quite simply an extraordinary live experience.
The Necks are also well known in Europe. Their soundtrack for The Boys was nominated for ARIA Best Soundtrack Album, AFI Best Musical Score and Australian Guild of Screen Composers Award. They have also recorded soundtracks for What's The Deal? (1997) and In the Mind of the Architect (three one-hour ABC-TV documentaries, 2000).

The Necks's song "Sex" seems to be a straightforward recitation of the titular activities and substances, backed by a hypnotic, trance-like musical accompaniment. The repetition of the lyrics and the refrain "Do them all" suggest a certain desperation, a desire to escape through hedonistic indulgence. However, the lack of any explicit narrative or context makes the song amenable to multiple interpretations. It could be a celebration of liberation and pleasure-seeking, or a sarcastic critique of the emptiness and degeneracy of contemporary culture. Alternatively, the song could be read as a plea for help or a cry for attention: the repetition of the refrain might be seen as an attempt to convince someone to join in the singer's debauchery, or a plea for someone to intervene and provide support or guidance.
The musical accompaniment of "Sex" is a hallmark of The Necks' style, emphasizing repetition, improvisation, and gradual change. The song consists largely of a single chord progression, playing over and over again with slight variations and embellishments. The repeated phrases create a sense of stasis and timelessness, while the subtle changes in rhythm and harmony provide a sense of momentum and development. Overall, the effect is both meditative and unsettling, creating a sonic space in which the listener can become lost or disoriented.
In terms of its meaning, "Sex" is a highly ambiguous and enigmatic song. Its lyrics are minimal, its musical structure is static, and its effect on the listener is highly subjective. However, this ambiguity and openness to interpretation is a hallmark of The Necks' music, which values improvisation, experimentation, and unpredictability above clarity or coherence. "Sex" may be a song about indulgence and excess, or a commentary on the emptiness of contemporary culture, or a statement of desperation and desire for connection. Ultimately, its meaning is in the ear of the beholder.

Let's not forget the engineer - me...

BTW: The bass player also made those great overtone sighing sounds with the bow in an overdub. There were some overdubs with the drummer doing various percussion, and I think possibly there was a piano overdub.
The discussions of what they were planning on the overdubs were interesting. It was like "after 10 minutes I'll start doing x", and around 30 minutes I'll do this...
Also, I'm glad they finished before the tape ended. Very hard to get an hour long two inch tape at the the time. I dropped the damn thing at one point, and had to find a new reel to shift it onto.

@michaelwebster8389
@@savanaviolenta I can tell you it wasn't a loop. Probably would have had to be a tape loop at the time if they were going to do it that way, but you're clearly not very familiar with the band.
