My Heavenly Father
The Oak Ridge Boys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Father I stretch my hands to thee
No other hand have I Lord
If thy withdraw thyself from me
Tell me whither, oh whither shall I go

'Cause Jesus bared the cross alone
And all the world go free
Lord now there's a cross for everyone
And I know there's a cross for me

I know it was Jesus who made me whole
I know it was Jesus who saved my soul

He picked me up, turned me around
Put my feet on solid ground

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Oak Ridge Boys' song "My Heavenly Father" convey a deep sense of religious devotion and dependency on God. The opening lines, "Father I stretch my hands to thee, No other hand have I Lord," express the singer's longing to reach out to God and their acknowledgement that no other source of help is available to them. They are seeking solace and guidance from their heavenly father.

The next lines, "If thy withdraw thyself from me, Tell me whither, oh whither shall I go," reveal a profound fear of God's absence or withdrawal. The singer is uncertain of where they would turn if God were to abandon them. This reflects a sense of reliance on God's presence and a belief that God's guidance is essential in their life.

The subsequent verse highlights the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, emphasizing that he bore the burden alone. The line, "And all the world go free," suggests that Jesus' sacrifice paved the way for salvation for all humanity. The singer acknowledges that although there is a cross for everyone, meaning that each person must face their own trials and tribulations, they recognize that there is a cross specifically meant for them.

In the final lines, the singer affirms their personal experience of redemption through Jesus. They acknowledge that it was Jesus who healed and saved their soul. The imagery of being picked up, turned around, and placed on solid ground illustrates the transformative power of faith in Jesus, grounding them in a newfound stability and purpose.

Overall, "My Heavenly Father" expresses a strong faith and deep reliance on God, recognizing the significance of Jesus' sacrifice and the personal salvation that comes through him.

on King Jesus

There are rumors that this was created in a recording studio. I think it's possible, but I can remember buying the album in 1974 just to listen to the live version of King Jesus. I still have the album after 50 years. Ahh, you're in store for a great singin' tonight. . . is a precious memory I have of that album.
