Unworthy Of His Love
The Oak Ridge Boys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Are you walkin' in sorrow
Are you drifting in sin
Are you always downhearted
With no peace within
I was once lost as you are
But God took control he lifted my burdens
And He saved my lost soul
No angel in Heaven, no mortal below
Could save me from sin or my endless woe
Then God sent His mercy from Heaven above
Now I am a witness of His wonderful love

God's wonderful Love, wonderful Love
Sent down from Heaven
From the Good Lord above
Yes He sent my Jesus from my Heaven above

Oh and then He forgave me and
Saved me by His wonderful Love

Overall Meaning

In the song "Unworthy of His Love" by The Oak Ridge Boys, the lyrics convey a message of hope and redemption for those who may be experiencing sorrow, drifting in sin, or feeling downhearted without inner peace. The singer acknowledges that they were once in a similar state, lost and burdened, until God intervened and transformed their life for the better.

The first verse starts by asking if the listener is walking in sorrow, drifting in sin, or constantly feeling downhearted. These questions are meant to establish a sense of empathy and connection, showing that the songwriter understands the struggles the listener may be going through. The singer then reveals that they themselves were once lost in a similar manner, but God took control, lifted their burdens, and saved their lost soul. This suggests that there is a way out of the darkness and a possibility for redemption.

The second verse emphasizes the magnitude of the change that occurred in the singer's life. It suggests that neither an angel in Heaven nor any mortal being on earth was able to save them from sin and despair. It highlights the desperation and hopelessness they felt before God's mercy intervened. However, in an act of divine intervention, God sent His mercy from Heaven above. This indicates that there is a higher power at work in their life, providing them with an opportunity for salvation and a second chance.

The chorus celebrates and praises God's wonderful love. It explains that this love was sent down from Heaven by the Good Lord above. The singer mentions that God sent Jesus to them as a symbol of His love and forgiveness. The forgiveness granted by God's love is described as a life-changing event, implying that the singer's sins were washed away, and they were saved by this remarkable love.

Through these lyrics, the song offers a message of hope, suggesting that no matter how lost or burdened one may feel, God's love is powerful enough to bring about transformation and salvation. It emphasizes that God's love is available to all, no matter their past mistakes or current circumstances. Ultimately, the song aims to inspire listeners to seek God's love and forgiveness as a means to find peace and a renewed sense of purpose in their lives.

on King Jesus

There are rumors that this was created in a recording studio. I think it's possible, but I can remember buying the album in 1974 just to listen to the live version of King Jesus. I still have the album after 50 years. Ahh, you're in store for a great singin' tonight. . . is a precious memory I have of that album.
