I Have Made Mistakes
The Oh Hellos Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I have made mistakes, i continue to make them
The promises i've made, i continue to break them
And all the doubts i've faced, i continue to face them
But nothing is a waste if you learn from it

And the sun, it does not cause us to grow
It is the rain that will strengthen your soul
And it will make you whole

We have lived in fear, and our fear has betrayed us
But we will overcome the apathy that has made us
Because we are not alone in the dark with our demons
And we have made mistakes
But we've learned from them

And the sun, it does not cause us to grow
It is the rain that will strengthen your soul
And it will make you whole

And oh my heart, how can i face you now?
When we both know how badly i have let you down

And i am afraid of all that i've built
Fading away

Overall Meaning

The Oh Hello's's song "I Have Made Mistakes" is a powerful ode to the struggles of life and the importance of learning from our failures. The opening lines of the song, "I have made mistakes, I continue to make them, the promises I've made, I continue to break them, and all the doubts I've faced, I continue to face them," speak to the universal truth that we all make mistakes and struggle to keep our promises. However, the message of the song is not to wallow in guilt or self-pity, but to embrace these mistakes and use them as opportunities for growth.

The chorus of the song, "And the sun, it does not cause us to grow, it is the rain that will strengthen your soul, and it will make you whole," is a powerful metaphor for the challenges we face in life. It is not the easy times, but the difficult ones, that truly shape who we are and make us stronger. The rain represents the struggles we face, and the sun represents the good times - while the latter can help us feel happy, it's the former that helps us grow as people.

The second verse of the song acknowledges the fear and apathy that can hold us back, but reminds us that we are not alone in our struggles. Though we may face our own demons, the mistakes we've made and learned from can help us to overcome them. The final lines of the song, "And oh my heart, how can I face you now? When we both know how badly I have let you down, and I am afraid of all that I've built fading away," speak to the regret we may feel for our mistakes, but also to the hope that we can build something better moving forward.

Overall, "I Have Made Mistakes" is a poignant reminder that our mistakes do not define us, and that we can always learn and grow from them.

I'm going through a break up currently, and it's completely my fault. I have trauma and demons that manifested during our relationship and she thought it would be best for us to no longer see each other. What hurts the most is that this is completely self inflicted. I was the problem.

I came across this song while on Reddit and the timing couldn't be more perfect. As hurt as I feel right now, I know that I will be a better husband and man because of what I went through with her. Everything can't always be sunshine and rainbows. There are points in life where you're going to experience rain. However, there's always something to learn from these storms that will allow you be whole.

That's my mindset currently going through this and I'm so happy that I have this song to help me get throught this. I think everytime I hear this song, it will remind of me what I had with my lady, and how I messed it up, but it will also always remind me of the lesson. Growing pains, I guess. Yes, I have made mistakes and I'll continue to make them, but my mistakes do not define me because I'll learn from them and continue to grow.

You might be going through your own rain and you're not sure when the sun is going to shine agian. Lord knows that's how I'm feeling. Well, you may not know when the sun will shine again but that doesn't mean it won't. Keep your head up and continue to put one foot in front of the other every single day and lean on God to help you.

If you're reading this, thank you for allowing me to be vulnerable and share this part of my life with you.

Yeah even I have made mistakes...
Mistakes my inner demons got me committed to
How I was swayed in the peer pressure of friends
And oh how nostalgic are those circles now
Every moment swept into the tide of time
I got into psychotropic substances with my friends while at the same time maintaining the life of a lawyer on the professional front.
This was my biggest mistake which eventually led to the hypocrisy of life
Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde literally
Am getting over it now but the shivers still takes me back in time...

This song sounds like a song they'd put in the end of a movie after everything is resolved and the characters look back and reflect on their journey

All of The Oh Hellos' music reminds me of Narnia, they just have a mystical and soothing yet wistful and fantastical quality about them with a hint of religious undertones, and this song especially reminds me of Edmund!

@mjortom5983

The lament of Eustace scrubb is litterally based on Narnia

@mahoganyfox9243

Perfect!

I listened to The Lamnent of Eustace Scrubb and went to see if they wrote anymore based on Narnia. I saw the title and thought this could be about Edmund, so I clicked it.

@Rasberrylil

The title "Dear Wormwood" is a reference to C.S. Lewis' 'The Screwtape Letters' as well
