The Lament of Eustace Scrubb
The Oh Hellos Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Brother, forgive me
We both know I'm the one to blame
When I saw my demons
I knew them well and welcomed them

But I'll come around
Someday
Father, have mercy
I know that I have gone astray
When I saw my reflection
It was a stranger beneath my face

But I'll come around
Someday

When I touch the water
They tell me I could be set free

So I'll come around
Someday

Overall Meaning

In The Oh Hello's song The Lament of Eustace Scrubb, the lyrics describe a character who is seeking forgiveness for his past mistakes. The opening line, "Brother, forgive me, we both know I'm the one to blame" expresses a sense of guilt and accountability for past actions. The following lines, "When I saw my demons, I knew them well and welcomed them" suggest that the character has struggled with inner demons, and has perhaps given in to them in the past. However, the chorus provides a hint of optimism: "But I'll come around someday". It seems that the character has recognized his mistakes and is seeking redemption.

The second verse continues this theme, with the character addressing "Father" and acknowledging that he has "gone astray". The phrase "When I saw my reflection, it was a stranger beneath my face" suggests that the character has had a moment of self-realization, seeing himself in a new light and recognizing the need for change. The chorus repeats again, with the promise that he will "come around someday". The final lines provide a hint of faith or spirituality, with the character being told that he "could be set free" by touching the water.

Overall, the lyrics to The Lament of Eustace Scrubb express a sense of guilt and the need for redemption. The character has made mistakes in the past, but is seeking forgiveness and hoping to turn his life around.

I have a code of conduct that shall elevate you towards God and make you one of "His" elite and that would probably grant you a great afterlife.

1- follow the purity within the heart, it is God guidance

2- Be humble in front "Him" and when selfish pride strike on you ask God forgiveness, it is like surfing a wave, the more longer humble you are following the pathway of God, the higher and faster you are reaching "Him"

3- fear and love God above people and be thankfull for your parents

4- do good deeds everyday only to please God

5- No sex with a child that haven't devellopped curves and tits unless she is no longer a virgin. You shall never rape.

6-Always stand against oppression when in sight

7-Never do incest

8-Pray God from time to time in all submissivity, like a muslim

9- Go to the mosque on friday to listen to the imam sermon about God or prophets then pray God with other muslims and, If you want, go to the church on sunday to listen to the priest speech to get wisdom

10- be fair with yourself. Be fair with others.

11- never be hypocrite unless the ennemy is

12- Never be orgueillous (Never be Seeing other people of faith like you were more important)

13-Always be there for an honest believer of God in need

14- Love all your brothers and sisters more than you love yourself, and see all honest believer of God that fear, love and respect "Him" has equal

15- Die honorably

I love how it outline is redimtion arch perfectly, and how he went from "His name, was Eustice Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it." in Dawn Treader to "His name, unfortunately, was Eustice Clarence Scrubb." in The Silver Chair.

That, for some reason, is one of my favorite parts about Narnia. I have never seen any other characters with more fitting introduction lines, and I've read a lot of books.

"At least you weren't as bad as me, Eustace. You were a jackass, but I was a traitor."

@SheWritesSeaofStars

I was just binge-listening to this album, not knowing the band all that well, and then THIS song comes up! Oh. My. Word. I have NEVER heard a song inspired by Narnia that wasn't in the movie! I have been a fan of Narnia since I was 8 years old, and this song was a quick reminder of all the adventures I had within those books. Absolutely incredible. I am now officially in love with this band.
