The Open is an English Five-piece indie rock band from Liverpool (Steven Bayley (vocals/guitar), Jon Winter (guitar), Jim Reynolds (bass), Roger Westwood (drums) and Alan Dutton (keyboards). Signed to Loog Records after a bidding war the band's first album was released in 2004 and entitled 'The Silent Hours'. Despite critical acclaim (Fly described them as 'Britain's Best New Band' and a mixture of The Cocteau Twins, Talk Talk’s ‘Spirit Of Eden’, The Verve and early U2) the album failed to reach a public more enthralled with the New York Art Rock styling that was popular at the time.
After a dispiriting tour, which saw the band playing smaller venues unsuited to their epic songs, drummer Scott leave and the ending of lead singers Steven Bayley's long term relationship the band entered into the studio to record their second album, 'Statues' which was released on 6th February 2006.
Heavily influenced Miles Davis Jazz and The Who's 'Tommy'-era mini opera's 'Statues' was released to even greater critical acclaim and could find itself a common feature in the upper echelons in this years end of year polls.
They split up in May 2006.

Heading out on the path you chose
We know no-one
Realise you're on your own
And you're going nowhere
If you're talking to yourself
And you're going nowhere
You and me girl
Make the weather change, make us feel again
Elevation
We're on the road to nothing
There's no escape from the path you chose
There is still hope
That you can find what you're looking for
And you're going nowhere
If you're lying to yourself
And you're going nowhere
You and me can
Make the weather change, make us feel again
Elevation
You and me can
Make the weather change, make us feel again
Elevation
And you're going nowhere
If you're talking to yourself
And you're going nowhere
You and me can
Make the weather change, make us feel again
Elevation
You and me can
Make the weather change, make us feel again

Elevation
The Open's song "Elevation" is a powerful reminder of the importance of self-awareness and personal responsibility in our own lives. The opening lyrics, "We're all alone in this life, heading out on the path you chose," set the tone for the entire song, emphasizing the importance of our individual choices in determining the course of our lives. The lines "Realize you're on your own, and you're going nowhere if you're talking to yourself," drive home the importance of taking responsibility for our own happiness and success, rather than relying on others or getting lost in self-doubt.
However, amidst the stark reality of our individual journeys, the song also offers a glimmer of hope. The lines "You and me girl, make the weather change, make us feel again, elevation" remind us that though we must navigate our own paths, we don't have to do it alone. Relationships and connections can offer us the support and inspiration we need to elevate ourselves and our lives. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes this message, reminding us that we are capable of creating change in our own lives and that we don't have to stay stuck on a path that's leading us nowhere.

It was nothing but a pleasure to discover these lads back in 2004 back when this came out. 18 years later and I still listen to The Silent Hours and Statues all the time, not to mention their wealth of (mostly) excellent b-sides and rarities. For a band so short lived, they sure did manage to pump out a lot of great material, for which I'm eternally thankful.
