Former ballerinas turned songstresses, they released their self-titled debut in 2000 with Epic. The album was met with lukewarm reception, but the girls were undeterred. After moving to New York, they released Light Of The Moon with Universal in 2005, with similar luck. After leaving the label and their manager to make some serious changes, they recorded their third album with producer Roger Greenawalt and after having opened a week's worth of shows for Albert Hammond Jr. [Catherine Pierce's fiancee] in November 2006, the girls were greeted with much more enthusiastic reception and excellent press.
Thirteen Tales of Love and Revenge was released in April 2007.
The Pierces recently gained even more press when they were featured on the December 5th episode of the hit TV show, "Gossip Girl".
However, despite Catherine's high-profile celebrity romance with the Strokes guitarist, Albert Hammond Jr., the increased publicity didn't translate into sales.
According to the You'll Be Mine Songfacts, the siblings were on the verge of calling it a day when a friend of theirs, Coldplay bassist Guy Berryman, offered to produce them. The result was The Pierces fourth album, You & I, their first release after signing to Polydor.

The Pierces Lyrics

I watched the fire burn it down
He doesn't know it yet
But there's fire in this town
And every thing I thought I'd be
Is burning right in front of me
And everything I thought I'd become
We want freedom
Water, earth, fire and oxygen
I move across the floor
He listens as the rain comes down
I'll see his face no more
And I need this room without a sound
Suddenly the air is thin
I don't know where I will begin
I'll bury all our dreams in the ground
In this world of ours
We want freedom
Walter, earth, fire and oxygen
Somewhere darling
Somewhere no one knows
Maybe in our next life
In this world of ours
We want freedom
Water, earth, fire and oxygen
We want freedom
Water, earth, fire and oxygen
He lights a cigarette
I watched the fire burn it down
The lyrics of The Pierces’s song "Elements" tells a story of the excitement and uncertainty of a new relationship. The song starts with the singer watching a man light a cigarette and reflects on the burning passion that is growing between them but is not yet fully recognized by the other person. The lyrics express the fear of the unknown that comes with a new relationship and the sense that everything the singer thought she would be, is burning down in front of her.
As the song progresses, the singer realizes that she can no longer see a future with this person and she needs the space to move on. The lyrics reference the four elements, water, earth, fire, and oxygen, which can be seen as representing different aspects of life which all contribute to the human experience in different ways. The song ends with the sentiment that perhaps someday, somewhere else, they will find that freedom they were searching for together.
Overall, the lyrics of "Elements" reflect a sense of longing, passion, and the fear of the unknown that permeates through new relationships.
