Former ballerinas turned songstresses, they released their self-titled debut in 2000 with Epic. The album was met with lukewarm reception, but the girls were undeterred. After moving to New York, they released Light Of The Moon with Universal in 2005, with similar luck. After leaving the label and their manager to make some serious changes, they recorded their third album with producer Roger Greenawalt and after having opened a week's worth of shows for Albert Hammond Jr. [Catherine Pierce's fiancee] in November 2006, the girls were greeted with much more enthusiastic reception and excellent press.
Thirteen Tales of Love and Revenge was released in April 2007.
The Pierces recently gained even more press when they were featured on the December 5th episode of the hit TV show, "Gossip Girl".
However, despite Catherine's high-profile celebrity romance with the Strokes guitarist, Albert Hammond Jr., the increased publicity didn't translate into sales.
According to the You'll Be Mine Songfacts, the siblings were on the verge of calling it a day when a friend of theirs, Coldplay bassist Guy Berryman, offered to produce them. The result was The Pierces fourth album, You & I, their first release after signing to Polydor.
Please Forgive Me
The Pierces Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
And we're all alone in this place but I'm dreaming
It's time to say goodbye and move on with our lives
But I can't be here without you
I've been torn apart and left on my own
And all this pain has burned a hole in my soul
So this time I hope I don't open up my eyes
And don't wake me up
It was dark when we collided
Even though I gave you love we divided
Oh We divided
All these feelings were clearly one-sided
So I will sing myself to sleep in this silence
Please don't wake me up
Death is crawling I don't know where I belong
In the snow and out in the cold
It's a fatal venture home
I'm bleeding out
So now you know
Please don't wake me up
Death is crawling I don't know where I belong
In the snow and out in the cold
It's a fatal venture home
I'm bleeding out
So now you know
I have to move on
I guess you weren't the one
I'm evolving you are not
I'm better off without you
The lyrics "We're drifting apart but nobody sees it" and "And we're all alone in this place but I'm dreaming" set the scene of a relationship that is slowly falling apart, yet the outside world remains oblivious to the emotional distance between the two individuals. The singer acknowledges that it is time to say goodbye and move on, but expresses their difficulty in letting go, as being without their partner feels unbearable. The pain of separation has deeply affected them, leaving a hole in their soul and making it hard for them to face reality. The plea to not be woken up can be interpreted as a desire to remain in a state of denial, avoiding the harsh truth of the situation.
The lyrics describe a collision in the relationship, where despite giving love, there was a division between the two parties. The singer reflects on how their feelings were unreciprocated and how they were left alone in their emotional turmoil. The act of singing themselves to sleep in silence symbolizes a solitary and melancholic coping mechanism, emphasizing the sense of loneliness and heartache they are experiencing. The repetition of "Please don't wake me up" reinforces the desire to escape from the pain and avoid facing the harsh reality of the situation.
The imagery of death creeping closer and the uncertainty of where one belongs amplifies the feelings of despair and isolation within the singer. The harsh conditions of the snow and cold represent the emotional barrenness and discomfort they feel in this relationship, emphasizing the idea of a fatal journey towards self-realization and acceptance. The admission of bleeding out signifies a sense of emotional trauma and vulnerability, highlighting the deep wounds that have been inflicted throughout the relationship.
In the final verses, the singer comes to terms with the need to move on and evolve from the stagnant and unsustainable relationship. The realization that their partner was not meant for them leads to a sense of empowerment and liberation. The assertion that the singer is better off without them signifies a newfound sense of independence and self-worth, ultimately concluding that letting go is necessary for their personal growth and well-being.
