Pleasure Bribe
The Pietasters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In through your window at night, stars are shining bright I see your silhouette and my blood begins to rise Don't know what is it that you do, little prostitute I offer you a pleasure bribe, ten bucks I'm inside

I look into your widened eyes, how many other guys? Are gonna see and be with you, can you tell the truth? Don't know what is it that you do, little prostitute I offer you a pleasure bribe, ten bucks I'm inside

Doesn't take much money to put you in your place I've got one half hour to not look at your face

The time I pay for you is through, what else can I do? I turn and walk on down the street, I'll be back next week Don't know what is it that you do, little prostitute I offer you a pleasure bribe, ten bucks I'm inside

Overall Meaning

The Pietasters' song "Pleasure Bribe" is a provocative and controversial commentary on prostitution. The lyrics suggest the singer's attraction to a female prostitute whose silhouette he sees through his window at night. He admits that he doesn't know what it is that she does but offers her a "pleasure bribe" of ten dollars to gain access to her services. The singer, in his ignorance of the realities of prostitution or the woman's situation, reveals his own vulnerabilities and insecurities through his increasing obsession and objectification of her.

The lyrics also highlight the contradictions and moral dilemmas inherent in prostitution for both the buyer and seller of sexual services. The singer's questions about how many other men have been with her, and whether she can be truthful about her sexual past, suggest the inherent risks of sexual promiscuity and the potential for disease or emotional trauma. Yet, he still chooses to pay for her services and become yet another customer. He is also aware of his own culpability in objectifying her and buying time and power over her for the duration of the transaction.

Overall, "Pleasure Bribe" is a dark and honest portrayal of the realities of prostitution and the darker side of human desire.

on Set Me Up

The song is about former DC mayor, Marion Barry.

On January 18, 1990, Barry was arrested with a former girlfriend, Hazel Diane Moore, in a sting operation at the Vista International Hotel by the FBI and D.C. police for crack cocaine use and possession. Moore was an FBI informant when she invited Barry to the hotel room and insisted that he smoke freebase cocaine before they had sex, while agents in another room watched on camera, waiting for Barry to accept her offer. During the videotaped arrest, Barry says of Moore, "Bitch set me up.”
