The Pillows Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Please, catch this my song
catch this my song
Please, catch this my song
catch this my song

Please, catch this my song
catch this my song
Please, catch this my song
catch this my song
Please, catch this my song
catch this my song
Please, catch this my song
catch this my song
Please, catch this my song
Please, catch this my song

Please, catch this my song
Please, catch this my song

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of The Pillows' song "1989" describe a person who has reached a city on a boat, and asks someone who is in a hurry if they could introduce themselves. This character has been lonely and has been wanting to meet someone for a long time, and seems to be surprised at the idea of things being funny. As they sit down quietly, they admire the liveliness of the city they have come to, but feel frustrated that they cannot present the gift they have brought with them. The person then implores whoever is listening to "catch this my song" as they have come in search of a new, braver self and want to be needed and heard.

Through this song, The Pillows seem to explore the universal longing to be understood and to connect with other people. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of someone arriving in a city, possibly as a stranger or newcomer, and feeling both awed and overwhelmed by the new surroundings. The song's chorus, with its repeated plea to "catch this my song," reinforces this idea of someone reaching out and trying to make a meaningful connection with someone else, through the power of music. The sense of vulnerability and uncertainty portrayed in the lyrics makes the song relatable and poignant.

Soaked from rowing my boat
At last I reached the town
Hello! How do you do?
Who are you? Are you in a rush?

I’ve always been alone
I’ve wanted to meet someone
Hello! How do you do?
What’s so funny?

I silently crouched down
In this happy town
Unable to give this gift I’ve kept hidden
I let out a breath

Please, catch this my song
Although I’m afraid
Please, catch this my song
I’ve come to search for a new me

It’s a lie that I’ve become accustomed
To my lonely solitude
My throat is always dry
I’ll forget my own voice

Please, catch this my song
I want to be needed
Please, catch this my song
Maybe I’ll meet someone tomorrow

Please, catch this my song
I’ve been singing
Please, catch this my song
So that I can reach you, 1989

Soaked from rowing my boat
At last I reached the town
And now, among the crowd
I’ve finally made it here

Please, catch this my song
Please, catch this my song

English lyrics:
Rowing a boat, getting wet
I finally reached a town
Nice to meet you! Good day!
Sorry, did I make you rush?

I've always been lonely
Wanting to meet someone
Nice to meet you! Good day!
What's so weird?

I sat just being quiet for a while
In that town that seemed like fun
The present that I was hiding
Without giving it to them yet, I took a little breather

Please, catch this my song. Catch this my song.
A new me
Please, catch this my song. Catch this my song.
That's what I came here looking for, it's kinda scary but...

Alone, in desolation...
To say I've grown accustom to it, would be a lie
It feels like I might even forget my own voice
My throat is getting very dry

Please, catch this my song. Catch this my song.
I want it to be heard as a necessity
Please, catch this my song. Catch this my song.
Will I be able to meet someone tomorrow?
Please, catch this my song. Catch this my song.
In order to reach you
Please, catch this my song. Catch this my song.
I've been singing since 1989

Rowing a boat, getting wet
I finally reached a town
And now, surrounded by this crowd
I finally reached this place

Please catch this my song.
Please catch this my song.

So much raw emotion in this song. This is what you get when a band stays together for 20+ years and doesn't sell out.

I love the message of the video, "we all just want to be noticed and appreciated." Most of the things we do in life, if we are honest, we do towards that. Well, pillows, I've certainly noticed and appreciated you guys. You are, and always will be, rock gods in my eyes. Thank you for existing, and thank you for doing what you do.

This is the way I see it... The reason why they're called "the pillows" is because of their dream-like music. It's like the music you could only imagine in your sleep. Their music is as awesome, warm, comforting, and feel-good as being on a pillow. What else can I say? the pillows just straight-up rock! And I'm not only saying that because I heard their music in FLCL, and I'm an anime guy. I totally love their music!

I was just thinking that. They have a very fitting name.
