I make a scene and get upset
But when I wake up in the morning
You bring me breakfast in bed
And act like there's nothing to forget
Maybe I should count my blessings
That you're just that type
So call me masochistic
But sometimes I want to fight
Every time I leave you pull me closer
I hang up the phone, you call me back
Why don't you mess me 'round
Like you're supposed to?
You're turning me cruel
'Cause I'm just wanting you to react
Hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey
You're turning me cruel
'Cause I'm just wanting you to react
If I say jump, you just say, "how high?"
I think you might love me to death
The way you do me, boy you're too nice
You gas me up, when I wanna be losing my breath
Maybe I should count my blessings
That you're just that type
So call me masochistic
But sometimes I want to fight
Every time I leave, you pull me closer
I hang up the phone, you call me back
Why don't you mess me 'round like you're supposed to?
You're turning me cruel
'Cause I'm just wanting you to react
Looking for a little confrontation
Now I know the nice guys turn me bad
The less you do, the more it makes me crazy
You're turning me cruel
'Cause I'm just wanting you to react
Hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey
You're turning me cruel
'Cause I'm just wanting you to react
Every time I leave you pull me closer
I hang up the phone, you call me back
Why don't you mess me 'round
Like you're supposed to?
You're turning me cruel
'Cause I'm just wanting you to react
Looking for a little confrontation
Now I know the nice guys turn me bad
The less you do the more it makes me crazy
You're turning me cruel
'Cause I'm just wanting you to react
Hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey
You're turning me cruel
'Cause I'm just wanting you to react
The lyrics of The Pussycat Dolls' song "React" speak about the complexities of a tumultuous relationship where the singer seems to be attracted to the idea of receiving toxic love from her partner. She admits that when she gets messed up at parties, she makes a scene and gets upset, but her partner always brings her breakfast in bed the next morning and acts like nothing has happened. The singer seems to acknowledge that her partner is too nice for her, but there is something masochistic about her that wants to fight and receive intense reactions from her partner.
The singer questions why her partner doesn't "mess her around like he's supposed to" and why he isn't confrontational. She admits that she is turning "cruel" because she wants him to react to her actions. She seems to be seeking attention and drama from her partner in the relationship, but also recognizes the negative impact this is having on her. The chorus repeats that her partner is turning her cruel because she wants him to react.
The lyrics also touches upon the idea that the singer is attracted to the idea of toxic love, which is not exactly a healthy trait. She mentions that the less her partner does, the more it makes her crazy. The song seems to be a commentary on relationships that thrive on drama and constant attention-seeking, even if it leads to toxicity and self-destruction.
