barely breathing in a fucked up town
all my life i was afraid
now i'm welcoming the feeling
black eyes under dirt and sun
written above "had the nerve to hurt everyone"
all my life,
carried a heart until my actions stripped it bare
waking up feels so wrong
hope you got what you wanted
waking up feels so wrong
hope you got what you wanted
arms stretched when the sun goes down
pulled away from a fucked up town
all my life i was afraid
now i'm welcoming the feeling
fought long in a violent world
stayed strong for the people i needed
all my life
carried a heart until my actions stripped it bare
waking up feels so wrong
hope you got what you wanted
waking up feels so wrong
hope you got what you wanted
arms stretched when the sun sets over me
arms stretched when the night carries me home
The Sleeping's "You'll Be A Corpse Before Your Time" is a haunting song that explores themes of fear, violence, and the consequences of one's actions. The opening lyrics paint a vivid picture of someone lying on the ground, barely breathing in a dirty, messed up town. This person has spent their entire life living in fear, but now they are embracing a new feeling - possibly the feeling of impending death. The lyrics suggest that this person may have been hurtful to others in the past, as indicated by the words "had the nerve to hurt everyone" written above their eyes. The second verse continues this theme of violence, but also includes a message of redemption as the singer has stayed strong for the people they love. However, despite their efforts, they still feel stripped bare and are unsure if they got what they wanted.
The chorus of the song, which repeats the line "waking up feels so wrong, hope you got what you wanted", suggests that the singer is facing the consequences of their actions and may be on the brink of death. The repeated line may also indicate regret or a sense of missed opportunities. The final verse of the song offers some solace, as the singer stretches their arms out during the sunset and night, perhaps indicating that they are finally at peace.
Overall, "You'll Be A Corpse Before Your Time" is a powerful and thought-provoking song that grapples with complex emotional themes. It illustrates the idea that one's actions have consequences and that fear can be a powerful motivator, but also that redemption and peace are possible.

i love this song so much to this day, however listening to it hurts knowing a band that could create a song this beautiful... a song that is a total masterpiece, is no longer together. a post-hardcore piano breakdown... insane. hurts that i never got the chance to see one of my favorite bands live. i didn't discover them til the year they broke up, months before. questions & answers, as well as this singular song, changed my life when i needed it. miss them so much. music hasn't felt the same since y'all quit.
