Promised Land
The Style Council Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
Brothers, sisters, one day we'll all be free
From fighting, violence, people crying in the street
When the angels from above
Fall down and spread their wings like doves
We'll walk hand in hand
Sisters, brothers, we'll make it to the Promised Land
You and I
We'll walk the land
And as one, and as one
We'll take our stand

When the angels from above
Fall down and spread their wings like doves

We'll walk hand in hand
Sisters, brothers, we'll make it to the Promised Land

Overall Meaning

The Style Council's song Promised Land is a powerful anthem about hope and freedom. The chorus repeats the phrase "We'll make it to the Promised Land" as a rallying cry for a better future. The song begins with the line "Brothers, sisters, one day we'll all be free" which sets the tone for the message of unity and peace. The lyrics speak to a society that is tired of war and injustice and longs for a world where people are not crying in the streets.

The imagery of angels falling from above and spreading their wings like doves is a poignant symbol for the hope of a better future. The idea of walking hand in hand with sisters and brothers signifies a united front against the struggles that have kept them apart in the past. The line "You and I, we'll walk the land" serves to bring the listener into the song and offer them the same promise of the Promised Land.

The song's message remains as relevant today as when it was released in 1989. It has the power to inspire and uplift those who hear it, calling to mind the importance of solidarity and a bright future. The Style Council's Promised Land is a true gem in music history that continues to stand the test of time.

Why is everybody crying about Joe Smooth being mad about this? That was years ago and he's over it... he even did a remix for the style Council's version.... so quit crying 1991 was 29 years ago... get over it.... both versions are nice and got huge club play.

@greggmitchell2392

I like both versions but also: Joe Smooth wrote the song, so he got royalies $$ every time TSC sold a record of their version of Promised Land, and since Paul & Co. brought this house classic wider attention/audience = bigger sales, isn't that a #winwin for both artists? Why would Joe Smooth be mad about TSC doing a cover version of his song as homage? We all appreciate Joe's original version and TSC's stellar cover.
