Back Into Your Arms
The Wyrd Sisters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

what I've seen could make the sainted lose their faith
and what I've done myself has made me turn and walk away
from who I was and had intended to become in this life of mine

I've seen the lies of the lover and the scars of the leaver
and it's that fear and desperation turns the faithless to believers
and though I lied and lied and lied I'd not intended to deceive her again
chorus:
and I cried:
ah, take me back into your arms
ah, bring me home again
ah, take me back into your arms
and on and on and on...

I went back out into the darkness to try to find my fear
'cause I've seen that nameless sinner in my faces in the mirror
and though I call out for forgiveness it's never clear if it's come or it's gone

chorus

we feel the scars of the lover and the lies of the leaver
and in our fear and desperation we are faithless or believer
and though we lie and lie and lie we're not intending to deceive ourselves

chorus

Overall Meaning

The Wyrd Sisters's song, Back Into Your Arms, showcases the struggles of an individual who has made mistakes in their past and is seeking redemption. The opening lines, "what I've seen could make the sainted lose their faith and what I've done myself has made me turn and walk away from who I was and had intended to become in this life of mine" describes the turmoil that the singer has experienced, to the point where they have lost faith in themselves and their aspirations.

The following lyrics, "I've seen the lies of the lover and the scars of the leaver and it's that fear and desperation turns the faithless to believers and though I lied and lied and lied I'd not intended to deceive her again" showcases the singer's realization that they have hurt others in the past and how fear and desperation can cause people to act in ways they never intended to. The chorus, "ah, take me back into your arms, ah, bring me home again, ah, take me back into your arms and on and on and on..." expresses the singer's desperate need for forgiveness and acceptance.

The second verse, "I went back out into the darkness to try to find my fear 'cause I've seen that nameless sinner in my faces in the mirror and though I call out for forgiveness it's never clear if it's come or it's gone" portrays the singer's internal struggle with forgiveness and their fear of never being able to overcome their past mistakes. The final lyrics, "we feel the scars of the lover and the lies of the leaver and in our fear and desperation we are faithless or believer and though we lie and lie and lie we're not intending to deceive ourselves" is a message to the listener that everyone has experienced pain and betrayal in some form and that it's easy to become lost in fear and desperation, but that ultimately people need to be honest with themselves and strive to be better.

54:01 I don't know why, but the Fool's Guild is my favourite joke. I wish we could hear the other chants, but the first one is hilarious:

"As for my mother-in-law,
I'm not saying she is fat,
But when she bendeth over,
There occureth an eclipse in Lancre."

And then the beginning of the last chant:

"There were these three fellows in Ye Mended Drum..."
