The Wyrd Sisters accidentally began their career in 1989 when three women (… Read Full Bio ↴The Wyrd Sisters accidentally began their career in 1989 when three women (who had no previous musical experience) came together to share their 'hobby' of songwriting with each other. Their first show as The Wyrd Sisters was at the University of Winnipeg that same year. A friend asked them to share their songs at a benefit for a women's shelter soon after the U show. Mitch Podolak (founder of numerous folk organizations and festivals) heard them at that performance and asked them to play at the West End Cultural Centre. The CBC came to record that performance... and that summer they were playing at the Winnipeg Folk Festival.

TWS have not looked back from that moment. They have enjoyed performances across the continent, from folk festivals to concert halls to full symphonic backing, they have been on national and international TV and radio shows, they have five recordings, three Juno nominations, three videos (all of which received full play on CMT) and Best Group award in the folk category of the Prairie Music Awards. They have also been included on numerous compilations and have been hired to write and record theme music for video and TV shows. Much of their music, such as 'Warrior', 'The Faucet', 'Farewell to Clayoquot Sound' and 'Leave a Little Light' has been covered, recorded and sung by performers and choirs from across the globe.

The Wyrd Sisters have, like any family (and long time band), changed and evolved and grown over the years. Original founding member, principal writer and lead stage personality Kim Baryluk has remained the constant thoughout the band's existence. Like groups such as 'Sweet Honey in the Rock' and 'The Flirtations,' where members have come and gone over the decades, the band continues to create the same beautiful music and carry the same inspirational message as it always has.

International critics have recognized the original sound The Wyrd Sisters have created with a fusion of folk/jazz/pop/blues as being a uniquely Canadian sound which sets the standard for up and coming singer/songwriters.

Hand painted cells is not "dated animation" people just stopped doing it, the animation of today looks flash-esque and robotic which isn't really better than hand painted cells it's much worse.

@@AvoozlPlays this is pretty low quality animation and also pretty old. But most film studios besides Fleischer, Disney and some French and Japanese ones just weren't that good at 2d animation back then. Doing high quality animation took a huge budget and talen, so people kinda just didn't care if it looks a bit bad/off and just went with it as long as it wasn't too wrong. Also the capture quality of the cells is sadly pretty bad, making it look even worse. It would be interesting to try and AI cleanup this series.

You have to realize that the upload is a lower quality recording of the show. But I wasn't speaking about the show itself but animation in general. Flash animation looks far worse, a lot of cartoons these days look like they were done in mspaint too.

But even that style can work if you pump enough budget and talent into it. It's just that most companies use it as a cost saving measure instead of an artistic style.

isn't Dated animation so much as it was done in the style of cheap, mass production cartoons in the 70s and 80s. when this came out in the 1990's animation was pretty slick before it started to backslide in the mid-noughts... so i'm guessing, this horrific animation style was done a'purpose as an homage or as a lampshade in some way. pratchett was good for that sort of wink-and-a-nod send-up.

Pure magical memories for me. I used to watch this time and time again with my two daughters when they were very small and they loved it. Everybody I've introduced Pratchett to over the years has become a big fan. If you admire pure genius it's impossible not to fall in love with the disc World.

Wasn't expecting it to be that faithful to the book, usually there are quite a number of changes when you turn a book into a movie, but this more or less felt like it was word for word. Probably even was, like they actually just used the book as the script.

Unfortunately, as a Gen X youth living in the States, Terry Pratchett's work wasn't really available. However once I was able to afford transportation and still have spending money and spare time that I found myself in book stores. Both literally and figuratively. It is only at this very moment that I realize how fortunate I was to have met the person who introduced me to Sir Terry, along with Neil Gaiman, Clive Barker, Anne Rice (look it was the early 80s, ok?) and many, many more.
This all reminds me of how much influence a novel can have on a young person's emotional growth. I believe Terry's works helped adolescent me to form an appreciation of English Dry Wit, and deadpan humor. I'm sure my parents weren't too thrilled with my attempts at humor while sitting around the dinner table!
I thank you Sir Terry Pratchett, and promise to share your work with my grandchildren.

reading the new bio that came out, apparently sir terry was very frustrated by not getting into the US market sooner. Took a while to find who would publish them. I remember in the 80s there was the good omen, soul music, and small gods,wasn't till I went to england to find the rest of them! Loved this film

Ahh, I always come back to watch Wyrd Sisters now and then. Seeing it in motion is something else than just reading it, but even then the written word, now spoken, is key here. My favourite example is the foreshadowing at 17:25 by Granny Weatherwax: "You'd have to be a born *fool* to be a king".

May Sir Pratchet rest in piece, his work will forever be one of the best and bring a smile to my face as long as I live.

I do recommend to read them in English too, though: A lot of humour and wit of Pratchett is only working with English as the wordplay he uses is hard to translate well into other languages.

This is the first adaptation I've ever come across that has the problem of being too loyal to the source material. As in it sticks to the order of events so strictly that it ignores the fact that this buggers up the pacing by having scenes constantly interrupt each other, a problem the book didn't have because Sir Terry's fantastic narration filled out the pacing of scenes where the literal sequence of events was very short.
It's really fascinating to watch in that regard.

Love Pratchett's novels. This adaptation did justice to the book. I'm trying to remember if it was in Wyrd Sisters that having a two headed cat born wasn't an ill omen considering Nanny Ogg's cat Greebo was it's only direct male ancestor for the last five generations. Magrat Garlick embodies the maiden although as a new age, beaded and tie-dyed flower child hippie of the 60's and 70's, Granny Weatherwax is the traditional spinster (strict school teacher) crone. I'll always see Nanny Ogg as a Margret Rutherford type of character.

Oh, THAT'S why it's called Discworld! Whenever I heard people mention it I always assumed something digital, involving computer discs and the like, which made the witches and magical elements a seem a bit weird.
It's not a world of discs but a world that IS a disc!
Well...mystery solved! On to find some other thing that puzzled me as a kid when I misunderstood the words...

This is still one of the best movies out there. A true delight. It would be such a delight to meet this version of Death when I go. Wonderful to see it again. Can't say as I cared for the fact it had to go and end. But I guess everything does so I should forgive it for that. I highly recommend it even with the fact it ends. Off to see what other gems are to be found.

I remember watching this years ago and really being shocked by the sudden change in animation quality at 45:19, when they walk into the house to summon the demon. It's much better than the rest of the series. More on model, better shading, more subtle movement. The quality goes back to usual immediately when the scene ends.
I'm thinking either it was done by a different team because the regular team couldn't do the digital effects that are unique to this scene, or maybe this scene was the original pilot for making the series to begin with, and the original animation team didn't have the opportunity to do it anymore when the pilot got accepted.

The joke I was making was that when the artists drew the demon, some of its power, or influence came through in the art.

Like if demons were real, and this one in particular saw it was being represented in media, he could choose to radiate his whatever power into the medium of art he’s being expressed in.

TLDR Scene looks better cause demon magic.

I remember watching this in episodes as they were broadcast on the BBC when it first came out. I think it was an episode a night over 1 week, so we didn’t have to wait too long, but long enough!

This is the first book of Mr Pratchett's that I had ever read. I've loved the Discworld ever since, although alas I must admit that my collection is somewhat lacking, but nevertheless, whenever I get the chance, I try to read as much of them as I can.

The Demon going all camp has always been the of the funniest things I’ve ever seen in connection to DW. I’ve always thought it was a crime more series weren’t commissioned.
