Long Time Coming
The Zutons Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But no one seen it coming
Long gone then
And your heart is still running
Now you're thinking bout the times
And the things you should've done
Well you might as well forget it
In the end you have won
Long-gone letters
Well it makes you feel better
Now you spend your days calm
But you spend the night shattered
It's a long time now
To be left in no doubt
It's a long time change
Do you still feel the same?
And you just can't shake that mood
Cause she's poisoned all your food
Now you're bogged down in those blues
And you just can't shake them loose
It's a long time coming
It's a long time now
To be left in no doubt
It's a long time change
Do you still feel the same?
Long time coming
The song "Long Time Coming" by The Zutons is about someone looking back on their past and thinking about what they should have done differently. The lyrics suggest that the person has gone through some kind of difficult experience, symbolised by a poison that has been put into their food, and that this has left them feeling stuck in a negative mood.
The lyrics are open to interpretation, but one way of reading them is that the person is regretting their mistakes and wishing they had made better choices. The line "you might as well forget it, in the end you have won" suggests that they have learned something from their experience and have come out the other side stronger. The "long time coming" refrain emphasises the idea that these realisations have taken a while to arrive.
The song has a melancholic and reflective tone that is emphasised by the slow, bluesy melody and the use of a trumpet. The repetition of certain lines, such as "long time coming" and "do you still feel the same?", creates a sense of reflection and contemplation.
