and this would later determine his choice of singing and writing in English.
Despite having no musical background in his family, Tiago started playing the acoustic guitar at age 8.
In 2007 his unpretentious acoustic single 'Nothing but a Song' drew attention to
his voice and led to the release of his debut album Let Yourself In, which gained notoriety after several of Tiago's songs were featured on major Brazilian primetime soap operas, TV ads and films. Tiago soon started touring across the country and in 2009 was Jason Mraz's Brazilian Tour opening act.
Let Yourself In was also released in Japan, where 'Nothing But a Song' peaked at number 11 on Billboard's Japan HOT 100 Chart, and in South Korea, where the public granted Tiago a Best Foreign Artist Award for his performance at the 2010 Grand Mint Festival. Another single — 'Fine' — featured on the popular South Korean TV series Personal Taste.
His second studio album Umbilical — which had New York-based Andy Chase as producer — was simultaneously released in Brazil, South Korea and Portugal on October 2011. Digital releases in the United States and Japan followed shortly after.
The Umbilical Tour had it's debut on March 14th at the 2012 South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas, and included performances in Portugal and over 20 sold out dates in Brazil.
- Nothing But A Song
Tiago Iorc Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Exempt myself from alibis
Surrender to me softly
You're trying to find a different side on me
You see this life
As nothing but a song without no rime
Hum dap dararah
Hum dap dararah oh
Devote myself with compromise
Selfishly lying, giving bad advice
Surrender to me once again
You're trying to find a boy inside a man
You ask me why
We suffocate our lives beneath the sky
(2X)
Hum dap dararah
Hum dap dararah oh
Maybe we're losing all reason in our silly fights
Maybe this time it'll seem right
I wanna tell you ?bout
The day we first met and
How I feel when you're holding me tight
Oh, and how you've changed my life
(4X)
Hum dap dararah
Hum dap dararah oh
Tiago Iorc's song "Nothing" is a soulful ballad that tackles the complexities of relationships and the struggle to understand one another. The opening line, "I read your mind a thousand times," suggests that the singer in the song has spent a great deal of time trying to understand their partner, and perhaps has failed to truly see them for who they are. The line, "exempt myself from alibis," suggests that the singer has stopped making excuses and is ready to face the truth about their relationship.
The second verse brings in the idea of compromise, with the singer saying that they have "devoted" themselves to the relationship but have also been "selfishly lying" and "giving bad advice." This suggests that they are struggling to communicate effectively and are perhaps even sabotaging the relationship in some way. The chorus, with its repeated "hum dap dararah" refrain, gives a sense of frustration and helplessness, as though the singer is stuck in a cycle of misunderstanding and can't find a way out.
The bridge of the song brings in a glimmer of hope, with the suggestion that maybe things can change. The line "Maybe this time it'll seem right" is particularly poignant, as it suggests that the relationship has been rocky for some time. The final verse brings in a note of nostalgia, with the singer reminiscing about the day they met and reflecting on how their partner has changed their life.
Overall, "Nothing" is a beautifully written and emotive song that speaks to the universal struggle of understanding and being understood in a relationship.
