Family Galaxy
Tim Exile Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm stuck in the vast shifting space where gravity disappears.
I'm orbiting some random place that I haven't seen for years.
I'm darting around on a path of Brownian mystery.
I can't tell what's the ground or what's the sky or what's in between!

I've been away for so long that I've ended up right back home,
Amongst the family galaxy of nothing that stays the same.
I'm in the family galaxy and we only have one rule:
Keep changing every day, don't stay the same or you'll be a fool!
The family galaxy keeps changing no matter what you do.
We don't know who we are, but we will always be here for you!

Go nowhere, watch the world unfolding day by day,
Each time in a different way.
We'll swim in the sea of change-
Rearrange!
We don't mind where the question leads us.
We know nowhere is better than everywhere.
We have only one answer:
We don't care.
Family galaxy's always there for you and me,
Just like a listening tree,
Come and play in the suns,
They're all ours.
Family galaxy wants you to come and play, and change every day
Come and play in the stars,
They're all ours.

Overall Meaning

These lyrics of Tim Exile's song "Family Galaxy" paint a picture of disorientation and confusion, but also of a sense of belonging and acceptance. The song begins with the singer expressing a feeling of being lost in space, unable to distinguish what is up, down, or sideways. This could be interpreted as a metaphor for feeling lost and ungrounded in life, without a clear direction. However, the next line adds another layer to this feeling, as the singer mentions that they haven't seen this "random place" in years. This suggests that perhaps they have been away from home for a long time, and are now feeling uncertain about their place in the world.

Despite this confusion, the next lines reveal that the singer has returned to a place called the "family galaxy," which seems to be a community of sorts. Here they find that the only rule is to keep changing every day, and not to stay the same. This seems to be a liberating concept, as it permits the individuals within the community to grow and evolve without fear of judgement or exclusion. The final lines of the song speak to the beauty of embracing change and uncertainty, and the comfort of knowing that the "family galaxy" will always be there for its members.

Overall, "Family Galaxy" can be seen as a celebration of the human experience, with all its twists and turns. It encourages listeners to embrace change and to find solace in the communities to which they belong.

The tempo/time changes on this are just so clever and amazing. The whole thing is so fluid and slippery. Total genius.

@manerscount123

Sorry to correct you, but just so nobody gets confused it's "My new career". Just so it's easier for people to find it lol.

@MournX

fucking exactly.

@tostare

@Digitos Crudos I just went to listen to that. I can't really hear the similarity but they seem like the sort of band that would be an influence on Tim Exile.

@rngesus8057

Not sure there are tempo changes? well if there are they are always some multiple of the original tempo. If you stick a click track behind this song it wont ever drift off a beat.

@maxwilliams6872

@@rngesus8057 There are tempo changes, 4 of them I think. In each case the kick drum switches to a different time signature (6 in the space of 4, not sure what that's called - 12/8?) and then the tempo changes to catch up with the kick drum, putting it back into 4/4 again. I'm sure you could work around it by changing the time signature to something increasingly unusual, but for any sane person trying to learn it, or teach it, you would say "There's a tempo change here, preceded by a funny syncopated bit with the kick drum"

I saw Tim live at Coco in Camden some time ago. Impossible to dance to because it's too fascinating watching him work. When he came out into the crowd with an old Kempston joystick from the early 90s and started manipulating the music with it... I think I just passed out. Amazing musician.

@JacobPadlock

I know it's a lofty claim, but I believe this is one of the greatest pieces of electronic music ever created.

@manerscount123

Not at all, id say it definitely is the best, its been years since ive first listened to this and its just as good as it was the first dozen times

@Soul-Taker

Same, actually it's one of the few pieces of electronic music which has ever interested me, held my attention.
