Morning Dew
Tim Rose Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

alk me out in the morning dew, my honey,
Walk me out in the morning dew today.
I can't walk you out in the morning dew my honey,
I can't walk you out in the morning dew at all.

I thought I heard a young girl crying, momma,
I thought I heard a young girl cry today.
You didn't hear no young girl crying, momma,
You didn't hear no young girl cry at all.

Walk me out in the morning dew, my honey,
Walk me out in the morning dew today.
I can't walk you out in the morning dew my baby,
I can't walk you out in the morning dew at all.

Thought I heard a young man crying, momma,
Thought I heard a young man cry today.
You didn't hear no young man crying, momma,
You didn't hear no young man cry at all.

Now there's no more morning dew
Now there's no more morning dew
What they've been saying all these years is true
'Cause there's no more morning dew

Oh, now there's no more morning dew
Oh, now there's no more morning dew
What they've been saying all these years was true
'Cause there's no more morning dew

Oh, now there's no more morning dew, now, now, now
Oh, now there's no more morning dew
What they've been saying all these years is so true
They have chased away all our morning dew

Oh, now there's no more morning dew

Overall Meaning

The song "Morning Dew" by Tim Rose is a powerful ballad with deep metaphorical lyrics. The chorus, "Walk me out in the morning dew, my honey" can be interpreted as an invitation for a last walk or journey. The dew at dawn is often seen as a symbol of new beginnings, purity, and freshness, therefore, asking to be taken out in the morning dew could suggest a want for a fresh start, a chance to begin anew. However, the reply, "I can't walk you out in the morning dew my honey, I can't walk you out in the morning dew at all," implies that the opportunity for a fresh start has been taken away or has already passed.

The verse "I thought I heard a young girl crying, momma," creates an image of agony and sadness. However, again, in response, "You didn't hear no young girl crying, momma, You didn't hear no young girl cry at all," suggests that the agony and sadness might not be present in the physical world, but rather the sorrows of the past that linger and torment in the present. Similarly, "Thought I heard a young man crying, momma... You didn't hear no young man crying, momma" suggests the same idea, that the sorrows of yesteryears still haunt and affect the present. The final verse, "Now there's no more morning dew, What they've been saying all these years is true, 'Cause there's no more morning dew," implies that there is no more hope for a fresh start, that the sorrows of the past have destroyed any chance for a new beginning.

Overall, Tim Rose's "Morning Dew" is rich in metaphors and can be interpreted in multiple ways. Whether interpreted as a song of love, loss, and new beginnings or a song of remorse, regret, and the death of hope, "Morning Dew" leaves a lasting impression.
