ADDENDUM: It was brought to my attention that the TimeSplitters Rewind discord is active, and that development is still ongoing. During the production of this video, I decided to prioritize my time to attempt to reach out to as many former Free Radical staffers who were recently let go as I could (although unfortunately the only one who got back back to me didn't feel comfortable sharing any details regarding the project) but I should have made more effort to speak to someone on the TSR team as well. Like I said in the video, it'll be exciting when it's finished, as the wider fanbase of the franchise could use it now more than ever. I feel tremendously bad for Ellis and Doak who came back to work on the new game. It's very rare for the original talent to come back for a project like that, I really can't imagine that they would be willing to try again in the modern industry after such treatment.

I'm more curious if Matt is in touch with the Devs on the then "Current" TimeSplitters project that got binned, cause the devs could continue the project in all but the TimeSplitters name, if they play their cards right they could turn this Spiritual Successor into a profitable Business Venture, cause again Matt could throw the idea at the devs on such a project and even team up with a good Publisher that would support them all the way, maybe Humble Bundle or something.

My brother and I owned a copy of TS2 for the GameCube. It was without a doubt the most played game on our GameCube besides Smash Bros. We loved the game and tried to complete every challenge the game had and we played the multiplayer to death. So many memories of that game summed up our teenage years. If anything, I'm just grateful it existed in the first place.

Had somewhat high hopes when Embracer formed (then as THQ Nordic) as a publisher for oddball mid-shelf stuff.

They then went to fatten themselves up by buying everything under the goddamn sun and bet everything on a deal instead of building a stable of developers and making money that way, but I suppose gambling with people's jobs is considered more business-savvy these days.

I remember when I first played TimeSplitters future perfect, and it blew my mind with just how many things that you could do in the game and the amount of playable characters. I remember finally when I saw at the game store they had time splitters too and since future perfect didn't have a number in the title I assumed it was the first one and then I realized future perfect was actually the 3rd. Ever since then I've been eagerly awaiting a new one. It's by far my favorite multiplayer game on GameCube. The nostalgia is absolutely overwhelming and it's soooooo sad how things have played out for the franchise.

If there's anything I've learned regarding Embracer Group being covered on this show, it's that they have death sentences in their pocket whenever things don't go their way and will hand them out like candy just to stay afloat.

I remember getting sucked into doing those bot deathmatches for TS2 on Gamecube and just having an absolute blast! Gonna have to revisit the game someday soon in honor of this video.

I put more hours into TimeSplitters 2 than any other game in my life, with TimeSplitters 3 probably being a distant 2nd. You never felt cheated when you got killed, you respawned into the action almost immediately, and you couldn't get through a match without laughing at least once. It was always fun, win or lose. If some company put out an HD release with online play, maybe even mapmaker levels with fewer memory restrictions, I'd throw money at it, no question.

Being someone who never knew about these games as a kid (I was only 5 when TS2 released) and just having recently really started picking up the games and absolutely loving them, it's really sad this series never got the attention it deserved. It is such a fresh take on the FPS as well as an evolution of Goldeneye and Perfect Dark as well as just being refreshing in general when compared to how diluted and samey that market can be, and it still amazes me that they never did a remaster trilogy with all three stories being available and making the multiplayer suite of all three a unified experience with updated map maker to boot. That is the route I've been expecting from the franchise for the past few years as it was a safe option for re-entry into the market (Crytek did something similar with Crysis Trilogy) and you can tell Deep Silver (and now Embracer themselves) really didn't know what they were doing when it came to this franchise or ones like Saints Row (another favorite of mine that is now dead because of their poor calls and mismanagement).

I really feel for these developers and really hope to see more from these really talented people as this industry is a bit of a mess at the moment. Thanks for the great video and can't wait for the next one.

It should be noted Timesplitters Rewind is still being worked on and can be kept up with from their Discord server. Since Rewind is entirely fan made the people working on it can only do so during free time and when they have the energy to do so. Since they have work, family, future employment, etc to focus on before it and those obviously come first.

Rewind definitely had major hurdles in the past though. From what I recall Crytek forced them to use the Cryengine for it as part of the deal of making a free fan game. I believe they originally tried making it in Unreal then had to move to Cryengine when Crytek told them to. Which caused a lot of work to be thrown out. After the buyout of the Timesplitters franchise again, by another corpo, they were eventually able to go back to Unreal engine to work with but that meant again restarting their work. Per their own words though the game is further along in development then ever before.

They do have a section on their Discord server where people can try and apply to assist with the project but you need to show previous work in the field and they need certain types of work than others.

And as terrible as it is for Free Radical being shut down by Embracer their closure doesn't harm the project of Rewind at all. Not unless the owner of the Timesplitters IP tells them they can no longer work on the project which hasn't happened yet (and hopefully doesn't).

I wouldn't hold your breath on TS Rewind. There's less than 10 people working on it in their spare time. I've been keeping up to date on it for like 6 years and last I checked they hadn't even finished the first game yet. Plus with all these acquisition changes even if they did release it, it'd be CCd in a hot minute.

A friend of mine that lived in another state came over to visit his family and he would come to my house almost everyday to play the game. I'd love to see an episode of What Happaned about Lord of the Rings: The third Age. Lately, I looked into the code and files from the game and there are a lot of unused skills, enemies and also there is equipment in the game you can only aquire via hacking. People always used to say it was because time restraints. I wouldn't be surprised if this is really the case, since it's an EA title, but maybe there are other factors, too. The game also feels rushed in the second half and it's also underwhelming that after Pellenor, you instantly fight Sauron, instead of fighting at the Black Gate, which Aragorn said, sooo ... yeah.
I'd definitely recommend that one for you, but information is scarce on this one. At least from my searches.

Man, this is the one I’m the saddest about. Real classic from my childhood, the second being proabably my first FPS ever. So much charm and character on every aspect, from the music to the art style, this game is a timeless classic.

I genuinely feel like Timesplitters is the true sequel to Goldeneye and Perfect Dark.

It took all the components that made those games great and ran full speed with them into the horizon.

My god do I miss it.

Timesplitters is such an underrated franchise. I have so many memories making maps, going through the story, and just loving the different characters. Ghost was always my favorite character in the franchise, Neo Tokyo was so good!

Man, TimeSplitters was such an important series to me growing up. It singlehandedly got me into the FPS genre right around the time it became so disgustingly, unbearably oversaturated. I never did play the first one regrettably. And with how oddly elusive it seemed to be, compared to the second and third ones, to this day I still haven't played it regrettably. Though I'd certainly like to.

Sadly the stuff that went down this year with Embracer happens in one form or another way too often in the business world. I had somewhat similar situations happen twice in the 2010s while I was in the world of IT. In the end it was always the "little people" that ended up with the short end of the stick with job losses and so on.
The absolute sickening part of it is if the C-level creeps spin it in a way that makes the shareholders happy those creeps still get rewarded!

I remember getting legitimately excited when Free Radical was bought by Crytek, thinking that Timesplitters could get a sequel using the Cryengine.... and then nothing happened.

It's really up to us, the fans, to make our own mods, fangames, spiritual successors to this franchise, because if Embracer won't, who else will?
The closest one I could find is Timeshifters, though there's also Goldeneye: Source, Perfect Dark: Source, Agent 64, Operation Pinkeye, Dark Data, The Spy who Shot Me and TimeWarp, among others I missed.

One of my favorite franchises of all times, it's insane and so unfair the amount of times the series has had the rug pulled from under it. Rewind always seems like an impossibility at this point, but I'll never give up hope.
Also since the port inside of Homefront was brought up. If any of you are Xbox owners, you can actually buy 2 and FP on the digital marketplace. No online play sadly, but you can still play couch co-op and the campaigns in that beautiful updated framerate!

Man that is seriously depressing. I bought the first game back in the day when I was still in high school. Was drawn in by booba and then was excited when i saw it was from the people that made Goldeneye. One of the first games I bought myself to play on my brother's PS2, we played the crap out of those games, making stupid maps that were just pure chaos. Lol I've been following the progress on Rewind for awhile now but kept hoping to hear news of an official game. To hear its been killed again in the worst way is heartbreaking.

I still own my copies of TimeSplitters 1-3 and those are the games that I love the most and replay at least once a year. Such a shame that we probably won't get any new game from the TimeSplitters series at all.

All we can hope for is that the TS: Rewind project is still alive and doing well. It would be a devastating thing to hear any news of this project being thrown into a bin.

I grew up playing timesplitters. It holds a special place in my heart for one of the best arcade shooters of all time. While im sad to see this go the way of the dodo. Part of me is happy that i wont get to see it get turned into a live service money sucking machine

I was talking about the possibility of Free Radical being shut down with some game devs at a meetup back in November when it was a mere rumor, and most of us agreed that at the rate the rate the industry is going, that it was going to happen eventually. But for it to happen right around Christmas, is probably the biggest punch in the gut they could have received. I never got to play any of the TimeSplitters games, but watching this as a game dev and gamer, it hurts, it really hurts.

I say it all the time, but TimeSplitters 2 is by far and away the best FPS I have ever played, and still an easy pick-up-and-play favorite of mine over 20 years later. Extremely sad to see what happened to Free Radical Design again (thanks a lot Embracer...) but I hope the devs can band together to give us something in the future, plus crossing fingers for the fans to finally compile together something for the TimeSplitters Rewind project. Keeping my head up! Thanks to Steve Ellis and David Doak for two decades of memories! It's time to split!

Part of me wonders if part of the reason that Rewind has taken so long is that some of the people involved in doing it might have ended up doing some consulting for the new game that was announced and then cancelled. Obviously, it could have just been an issue of not having enough time to fit development around their personal commitments but if I was in charge of the new TS game I'd be very interested to see what they were doing up close.

It's been so long since the last game came out, so having a bunch of volunteers working on recreating the gameplay with a modern engine would have probably been an invaluable resource when it comes to the kind of challenges involved in getting the game to look and feel authentic to the series. At the very least, I would think that seeing the original PS2 models upscaled with more advanced lighting applied to them would have been really helpful when it comes to updating the visuals. The new game would have needed a lot of new models, so seeing which ones held up the best and if any tweaks needed to be made to any of them could have allowed the new game to use less complex assets with a quicker turnaround for each character model without the graphics looking too dated.

Time will tell if they ever collaborated at all, but regardless I do wish the guys working on it for free all the best and that they aren't put in a difficult position by the new rights holders (whoever that ends up being).

I never owned a TimeSplitters game, but I spent at least one evening playing multiplayer deathmatches with my friends over at one of their houses. I still remember it quite vividly; I was playing as the sentry bot and mostly used shotguns and the minigun against them. I wouldn't consider myself a huge fan of the franchise, not knowing it that well, but remembering how fun the game was all these years later, the state of affairs really makes me feel for the die-hard TS fans. Hopefully they'll catch a break sooner rather than later.

I spent a lot of my childhood playing TS2, it was such a fun game. It's so sad how this franchise was treated, I'm always hopeful for a proper re-release or continuation of the series but it's nice to know that a HD version of my favourite game is obtainable, can't wait to play snake again

I loved timesplitters for its make your own maps. I played only multi-player with my friends. It played like goldeneye, which was why I played it. It started familiar controls and a main focus on multi-player

Some of my best memories of playing on my PS2 were the Timesplitters games. They weren't afraid to do their own thing and I grew to love many of the characters, even giving some of the generic ones their own names (like naming the female trooper in TS2 Andrea).

This game was a hidden gem the that was at the height when the PS2 was king. I had enjoyed Timesplitters 2 & future perfect when it first came out, and still do to this day. Love your videos Matt 👍 great insight to this. 12:36 case in point right here 🤣.

Another banger video Matt! If you wanna keep with the time travel theme for a bit, you should totally look into Darkest of Days and maybe TimeShift. I dunno what it is about time travel related games and them having rocky developments, but those two were ones that were decent (at least as far as my spotty memory goes of the final products.)
