I'll Never Smile Again
Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra & Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll never smile again
Until I smile at you
I'll never laugh again
What good would it do
For tears would fill my eyes
My heart would realize
That our romance is true
I'll never love again
I'm so in love with you
I'll never thrill again
To somebody new
Within my heart
I know I will never start
To smile again
Until I smile at you

Within my heart
I know I will never start

To smile again
Until I smile at you

Overall Meaning

Tommy Dorsey's song "I'll Never Smile Again" is a heartrending ballad that speaks of a love that has been lost and the emptiness that remains in its place. The opening lines "I'll never smile again, until I smile at you" is a clear indication that the singer's love interest has somehow left or died, and that this loss has brought forth an overwhelming sadness. The lyrics go on to state that the singer will never be able to laugh again, as it would only serve to remind them of the happy moments they shared with their partner. The sadness is palpable throughout the song, as tears fill the singer's eyes and they come to the realization that their love was true.

The song takes on a heartbreaking turn when the singer admits that they will never love again, as they are still so deeply in love with the one they lost. The final two lines, "Within my heart, I know I will never start to smile again until I smile at you", repeat the opening statement, bringing the song to a haunting close.

The only version of this on Y.T. without the annoying "surface noise" heard from the very beginning. And this is evident on so-called "Re-Mastered" versions.

Thanks. It's been a number of years since I created this restoration (spending a fair amount of time on it as I recall). Not perfect, but more listenable to my ears than the 'official' reissue version which had appeared repeatedly over the decades.

I'm glad the Victor master was released several years ago with the high level constant hiss. It explains why all their re-issues over the years were devoid of high frequencies. The version in the complete Dorsey-Sinatra CD set was a considerable improvement, and I could only guess as to how they did it. Some modern re-issues of other artists have suffered the same annoying low-pass filtering. And then there are the CD re-issues of LP albums made from the same tapes - Edison would have sounded better.

I like the surface noise, it's relaxing and authentic

80 years later, Frank Sinatra is still charting in "Billboard". His "Ultimate Sinatra" album makes regular appearances in "The Billboard 200" chart.

I wish I knew u man. I'm 17 and have listened to music like this since I was your age. This song just always reminds me of one of my best friends who moved away. Whenever it plays I get into an indescribable zone and feel like I'm floating. And that feeling is exactly what I felt when I was around her until she moved far far away and I never saw her beautiful face again.
