Polka Dots And Moonbeams
Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra & Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A country dance was being held in a garden
I felt a bump and heard an "Oh, beg your pardon"
Suddenly I saw polka dots and moonbeams
All around a pug-nosed dream

The music started and was I the perplexed one
I held my breath and said "May I have the next one?"
In my frightened arms, polka dots and moonbeams
Sparkled on a pug-nosed dream

There were questions in the eyes of other dancers
As we floated over the floor
There were questions but my heart knew all the answers
And perhaps a few things more

Now in a cottage built of lilacs and laughter
I know the meaning of the words "Ever after"

And I'll always see polka dots and moonbeams
When I kiss the pug-nosed dream

Overall Meaning

The song Polka Dots and Moonbeams is a romantic ballad that describes a chance encounter at a garden dance. The singer bumps into someone and apologizes, only to be captivated by the sight of polka dots and moonbeams surrounding a pug-nosed dream. The music starts and the singer musters the courage to ask for a dance, holding the pug-nosed dream in their arms. Despite the questions from other dancers, the singer knows the answers in their heart, and the two float across the dance floor. The song concludes with an idyllic scene of living happily ever after in a cottage, where the singer will always see polka dots and moonbeams when they kiss their pug-nosed dream.

@moronpawn

A country dance was being held in a garden

Sentí un golpe y escuché un "Oh, disculpe"
I felt a bump and heard an "Oh, beg your pardon"

Suddenly I saw polka dots and moonbeams

All around a pug-nosed dream

The music started and was I the perplexed one

I held my breath and said "May I have the next one?"

In my frightened arms, polka dots and moonbeams

Brillaba en un sueño de nariz chata
Sparkled on a pug-nosed dream

There were questions in the eyes of other dancers

Mientras flotamos sobre el suelo
As we floated over the floor

There were questions but my heart knew all the answers

Y tal vez algunas cosas más
And perhaps a few things more

Now in a cottage built of lilacs and laughter

I know the meaning of the words "Ever after"

Y siempre veré lunares y rayos de luna
And I'll always see polka dots and moonbeams

Cuando beso el sueño de nariz chata
When I kiss the pug-nosed dream

I went to a church service a few days ago, and during Communion the band played this tune. No singing. No joke! I kidded the pianist about it. He was a Sinatra fan.

@charmisq1

They don’t make music like this anymore. Just the lyrics of this song is so wonderful, it makes you think of the possibilities of love. I don’t know what it is but I sometimes feel like I should be living in a different era

@eustace8520

We live in the best worst era. We have all the beautiful music from the past in our hands, and we can listen to anything at any given moment (where there's internet, that is). But at the same time, we live in a time where true beauty is no longer valued, and garbage is glorified. Just be glad you're living swell, I guess.

I dreamt of this song then heard it ,then saw a past life ❤️

I prefer Frank's earliest work, before he was so full of himself. He really did sound like an angel.

@starbuono825

Same here ! I thought I the only one ! 😂👍👍👍👍

@ProdigyBowlersTour

Don't kid yourself. He sounded pretty awesome once his voice matured, too.

@monesqe

@@ProdigyBowlersTour The Capitol era had fantastic music and he could still sing. He could still hold notes without his voice cracking. He didn't yet have to shout to hit high notes. The Dorsey-James era was the best for pure vocals. Really was so smooth.

@Sealed_Chamber

A timeless song.

Happy Birthday in Heaven, Aunt Gena. Miss you and Uncle Tommy. Love, your Godchild Janet and Cousin Jimmy xoxo
