For the first time in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest, the outcome of the voting resulted in a tie for the first place. Four countries gained 18 points each: France, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom. Since there was no solution for this situation, all four countries were declared winners. Luckily, there were four medals available to the four winning singers - the four medals were intended for the winning singer and three winning songwriters.
The four winners differed a lot from one another: France had a haunting ballad performed by Frida Boccara, the Netherlands sent in Lenny Kuhr with a guitar, Spain and Salomé performed the energetic Vivo Cantando whereas the star from the British islands, Lulu, had a happy, clap-along song. However, having four winners caused lots of criticism from the media and several TV-stations re-considered participating in the following Eurovision Song Contest. Had the 1969 Eurovision Song Contest still attracted 16 countries, the number went down to only 12 in the 1970 edition of the contest.
Eurovision Song Contest 1988 - Dublin
Entry for Sweden
Performer: Tommy Körberg
Song title: Stad I Ljus
Song writer(s):
Song composer(s): Py Bäckman
Sang in Position: 2
Final Position: 12
Total Points: 52
The 1988 Eurovision Song Contest was hosted in Dublin for the third time, and featured one of the most exciting votings in the long history of the contest. Switzerland's entry Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi performed by Céline Dion beat the runner-up, the United Kingdom's Scott Fitzgerald by just a single point. Before the last vote, the UK entry was leading with 136 points to Switzerland's 131 but then Yugoslavia, the last country to vote, gave six points to Switzerland while ignoring the British song Go completely.
For Céline Dion, winning the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest was the starting point of her globe-wide career. Had she only been known in Canada and France before 1988, the Eurovision Song Contest gave her the opportunity to record songs which would sell millions of copies all around the world. But not only Céline Dion made a huge profit from the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest, also her colleague Lara Fabian who was singing for Luxembourg started a successful career after the contest with a mainly French-sung repertoire.
In 1988, 21 countries participated in the Eurovision Song Contest. Cyprus decided to withdraw because their entry did not match the rules of the contest: it had already been published previously. The venue of the 1988 contest was the same as in 1981, but this time, RTÉ managed to create a very special stage that created the illusion of a spage age-style grid which suggested that it was a huge arena with lots of lighting and special effects. Even nowadays, this set is still praised by experts.
Likgiltigheten är en form
Tommy Körberg Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Då brukar du klä dig i likgiltighet
The song "Likgiltigheten är en form" by Tommy Körberg is about the destructive nature of indifference. The lyrics describe how indifference is a way of coping with despair and that it allows us to keep difficult questions at bay. However, the song warns that indifference can also turn against us, and that when we need it most, it may disappear and leave us feeling helpless and broken.
The first verse describes how indifference is like a parent who cradles their child, but at the same time ignores the fact that the child will grow up, speak, learn how to walk, and ultimately leave them. In the same way, indifference may provide comfort and a sense of security, but it also prevents us from facing difficult realities and dealing with them in a constructive way. The second verse talks about how indifference is a way of surviving and avoiding the pain of having to confront difficult questions, but also warns that it can turn against us and leave us feeling helpless and hopeless.
Overall, the song is a commentary on the human condition and our need for both vulnerability and resilience. The lyrics suggest that while indifference may provide temporary relief, it ultimately robs us of our ability to connect with ourselves and others, and to find meaning and purpose in our lives.
Line by Line Meaning
You use indifference as a way to cope with your despair
Och stilla vaggar vid ditt bröst
You hold onto it as if it were a child, seeking comfort
You treat your despair like a helpless child, unable to recognize that it should grow, learn and eventually leave you
That it will develop, communicate and learn to stand on its own
Och lämna dig
Eventually leaving you behind
If you lack courage, strength or happiness
Or if your despair is too small and unnoticeable
För att stå för sig själv
To stand on its own
Om jag säger så
If that's the case
Då brukar du klä dig i likgiltighet
You tend to dress yourself in indifference
Det är ditt sätta att överleva
That's how you survive
Det som sliter i dig
It's what tears at your insides
And demands answers you don't have
Därför likgiltighet som håller frågan borta
That's why indifference helps keep those questions at bay
Och som är enkel och användbar
It's simple and useful
Men en dag ska du förrådas
But one day, you will be betrayed
Av likgiltigheten
By the indifference you held onto
Just like the day you betrayed yourself to it
Du ska stå där modlös, och kraftlös
You will find yourself hopeless and powerless
Without joy and without any indifference to hold onto
Den dag du behöver den bäst
The day you need it most
Ska den försvinna
It will disappear
Ty den da′n den försvinner behöver du den bäst
Because that's the day you need it most
Den försvinner och den krossar dig
It disappears, but not before crushing you
Genom att försvinna
By disappearing
Som ett tomrum krossar sitt skal
Just like a void crushes its container
När världen ger sig till känna
When the world reveals itself
