Red Red Wine-1969
Tony Tribe Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Go to my head
Make me forget that I
Still need her so
Red, red wine
It's up to you
All I can do, Ive done
No, memories won't go
I'd have sworn
That with time
Thoughts of you
Would leave my head
I was wrong
And I find
Just one thing
Makes me forget
Red, red wine
Stay close to me
Don't let me be alone
It's tearing apart
My blue, blue heart
The lyrics to the song "Red, Red Wine" by Tony Tribe are about a man who drinks red wine to forget about his lost love. The wine goes to his head and makes him forget that he still needs his former lover. The memories of her still linger in his mind despite his efforts to move on. He had hoped that with time, thoughts of her would leave his head, but this has not been the case. He finds that only red wine can make him forget about her.
The lyrics convey a sense of heartbreak and desperation. The man is caught in a cycle of trying to move on from his lost love, but finding that memories of her won't go away. He turns to red wine as a way to escape his pain, but ultimately, it only tears him apart. The song suggests that trying to forget about someone you love is a futile effort, and that the only way to heal is to confront your emotions head-on.

Red, red wine,
Goes to my head..
Makes me forget that I,
Still need her so..
Red, red wine,
It's up to you..
All I can do, I've done.
Memories won't go;
Memories won't go..
I have sworn, that with time,
Thoughts of you would leave my head.
I was wrong, and I find,
Just one thing makes me, forget.
Red, red wine,
Stay close to me.
Don't let me be alone,
It's tearin' apart..
My blue, blue heart.
(..)
I have sworn, that with time,
Thoughts of you would leave my head.
I was wrong, and I find,
Just one thing makes me, forget.
Red, red wine,
Stay close to me.
Don't let me be alone,
It's tearin' apart

This record reached number 46 in the U.K. pop charts on 22.07.1969. Reggae specialist shops in London and Birmingham (and other cities) were selling this by the boxload but these weren’t counted when compiling the charts.

Thank you, Tony Tribe, thank you ska, thank you Jamaica and all who brought this music to my sore ears. Such an uplifting of my downtrodden spirit. Ahhhhh. I know much of this music was reaction to oppression. But only one tactic will run the oppressors out of town - when the masses unify and tell them "NO MORE!" They always divide their targets before conquering. So, remember who the real enemy is. It is NOT your neighbor, even if they don't act or look like you.
