Keenan incorporates into the lyrics part of comedian Bill Hicks' "Arizona Bay" routine by telling the listener to "learn to swim, see you down in Arizona Bay." Hicks appears in the liner notes/sleeve as a mad doctor, and a lenticular image below the CD case tray illustrates California falling into the sea, as is spoken of in the song. California falling into the sea is a prediction made by Edgar Cayce, also known as "The Sleeping Prophet," about the end of days in which California and New York are to sink into the ocean among a plethora of other devastating weather changes.
It also refers to the Church of Scientology with the line "Fuck L. Ron Hubbard and fuck all his clones", this is because the band members of Tool are opposed to the brainwashing behaviour and supression of freedom in Scientology.

Hey, hey, hey, hey
Some say the end is near
Some say we'll see Armageddon soon
Certainly hope we will
I sure could use a vacation from this
Bullshit three ring circus
Here in this hopeless fucking hole we call L.A.
The only way to fix it is to flush it all away
Any fucking time, any fucking day
Learn to swim, see you down in Arizona Bay
Fret for your figure and
Fret for your latte and
Fret for your lawsuit and
Fret for your hairpiece and
Fret for your Prozac and
Fret for your pilot and
Fret for your contract and
Fret for your car
It's a Bullshit three ring circus
Sideshow of freaks
Here in this hopeless fucking hole we call L.A.
The only way to fix it is to flush it all away
Any fucking time, any fucking day
Learn to swim, see you down in Arizona Bay
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
Some say a comet will fall from the sky
Followed by meteor showers and tidal waves
Followed by fault lines that cannot sit still
Followed by millions of dumbfounded dipshits
And some say the end is near
Some say we'll see Armageddon soon
I certainly hope we will
I sure could use a vacation from this
Stupid shit, silly shit, stupid shit
One great big festering neon distraction
I've a suggestion to keep you all occupied
Learn to swim, learn to swim, learn to swim
'Cause mom's gonna fix it all soon
Mom's coming 'round to put it back the way it ought to be
Learn to swim, learn to swim, learn to swim, learn to swim
Learn to swim, learn to swim, learn to swim, learn to swim
Fuck L Ron Hubbard and fuck all his clones
Fuck all those gun-toting hip gangster wannabes
Learn to swim, learn to swim, learn to swim, learn to swim
Learn to swim, learn to swim, learn to swim, learn to swim
Fuck retro anything
Fuck your tattoos
Fuck all you junkies and
Fuck your short memory
Learn to swim, learn to swim, learn to swim, learn to swim
Learn to swim, learn to swim, learn to swim, learn to swim
Yeah, fuck smiley glad-hands with hidden agendas
Fuck these dysfunctional insecure actresses
Learn to swim, learn to swim, learn to swim, learn to swim
Learn to swim, learn to swim, learn to swim
'Cause I'm praying for rain
I'm praying for tidal waves
I want to see the ground give way
I want to watch it all go down
Mom, please flush it all away
I want to see it go right in and down
I want to watch it go right in
Watch you flush it all away
Yeah, time to bring it down again
Yeah, don't just call me pessimist
Try and read between the lines
And I can't imagine why you wouldn't
Welcome any change, my friend
I wanna see it come down
Bring it down, suck it down, flush it down
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
The lyrics in Tool’s song Ænema seem to be expressing frustration and disgust towards the state of the world, specifically Los Angeles. The first verse introduces the idea of an impending apocalypse, potentially caused by natural disasters, and the hope that it will come soon as a sort of escape from the current state of things. The following verses, delivered in the style of a mocking chant, criticize the superficialities and distractions of modern society, such as vanity and legal battles. The chorus repeats the idea that the only solution is to “flush it all away” and “learn to swim,” suggesting a complete overhaul and departure from the current way of life. The song ends with a call to action, urging listeners to not be afraid of change and welcoming the destruction of the current state of things as an opportunity for rebirth.
Overall, the lyrics suggest a deep dissatisfaction with the status quo and a desire for something more meaningful and authentic. The call to learn to swim can be interpreted as a metaphor for learning to adapt and survive in the face of change and upheaval, something that is necessary for personal growth and societal progress.

I am 46, fighting brain cancer, woke up sick today after completing round 4 of chemotherapy. This is the song I went to. It's blaring in my ears right now. What a perfect song.
@Maggot39967
A lot of these comments are jokes but yours seems serious and I hope you're doing better man.
@damicolicious
No joke, diagnosed in Oct '21. Had it removed, doing a year of meds. I graduated high school in '95 and Tool has never left me. Every album a gem. When music causes your endorphins to flow, your adrenaline to rush, and goosebumps all over your body, it's a natural pain reliever and mood booster. Next time you're sick or feel like shit all over, listen to the song that lifts you from your chair all by itself...LOUD 👍
Oh, and I should be ok. We maybe caught it early enough.

Damn dude, we're the same age... Your comment just gave me a gut punch. Sending you prayers and good vibes that you kick cancer's ass. As for this song, you are spot on with the adrenaline rush... Good for the soul.
