Hooker With a Penis
Tool Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I met a boy wearing Vans, 501s
And a dope Beastie tee, nipple rings
New tattoos that claimed that he
Was OGT, back from '92, from the first EP

And in between sips of Coke
He told me that he thought we were sellin' out
Layin' down, suckin' up to the man

Well now I've got some
Advice for you, little buddy
Before you point the finger
You should know that I'm the man
I'm the man and you're the man
And he's the man as well
So you can point that fuckin' finger up your ass

All you know about me is what I've sold ya, dumb fuck
I sold out long before you'd ever even heard my name
I sold my soul to make a record, dip shit
And then you bought one

I've got some advice for you, little buddy
Before you point the finger
You should know that I'm the man
If I'm the fucking man
Then you're the fucking man as well
So you can point that fuckin' finger up your ass

All you know about me is what I've sold you, dumb fuck
I sold out long before you'd ever even heard my name
I sold my soul to make a record, dip shit
And then you bought one

All you read and wear or see and
Hear on tv is a product begging for your
Fat-ass dirty dollar
Shut up and

Buy, buy, buy my new record
And buy, buy, buy, send more money
Fuck you, buddy
Fuck you, buddy
Fuck you, buddy
Fuck you, buddy

Overall Meaning

"Hooker With a Penis" is a song that explores the idea of selling out and how fans react negatively to the perceived sellouts. The lyrics describe a conversation between the lead singer and a fan who accuses them of selling out to the man. The singer responds that he is the man and the fan is the man in his own way, implying that everyone has to navigate a system of selling and making money. The chorus lines "all you know about me is what I've sold ya, dumb fuck, and then you bought one" show the frustration the singer feels towards fans who believe they know everything about the artist and their artistry.

The song is layered with sarcasm and irony. The singer uses the word "buddy" repeatedly, but the tone of voice suggests animosity rather than gentleness. Also, the reference to the Beastie Boys T-shirt and the 501 jeans are symbols of grunge and punk heritage which suggests that the singer has been in the business for a long time and knows more than the younger generation.

Overall, the song critiques the culture of selling and buying music while remaining self-aware of their own participation in it. "Hooker With a Penis" also highlights how the music industry is all about making money at the cost of artistic integrity. It serves as a warning to young artists who are just entering the industry to be careful and aware of the systems at play.

I met a boy wearing Vans, 501s And a dope Beastie tee, nipple rings New tattoos that claimed that he Was OGT, back from '92, from the first EP
I encountered a guy donning Vans shoes, 501s denims, and a cool Beastie Boys t-shirt, with nipple rings and recent tattoos that asserted that he was an Original Gangster of Tool since '92, from the band's first Extended Play.

And in between sips of Coke He told me that he thought we were sellin' out Layin' down, suckin' up to the man
As he sipped his Coke, he confided in me that he believed we were compromising by succumbing to the pressures of mainstream commercialization, settling to be subservient to the system.

Well, now I've got some Advice for you, little buddy Before you point the finger You should know that I'm the man I'm the man and you're the man And he's the man as well So you can point that fuckin' finger up your ass
Here's some guidance for you, mate, before you cast ire towards me. You ought to recognize that I am in charge, you are in command, and he also has the authority, so you might as well just shove that finger up your nether region.

All you know about me is what I've sold ya, dumb fuck I sold out long before you'd ever even heard my name I sold my soul to make a record, dip shit And then you bought one
You only discern what I've pitched to you, you ignoramus. I'd already abandoned my artistic principles even before you knew me. I bartered my principles for a shot at a music album, moron. And then, you went ahead and purchased it.

All you read and wear or see and Hear on tv is a product begging for your Fat-ass dirty dollar Shut up and
Everything you consume, wear, observe, or hear is an item seeking your cash, you lazy slob. So, just quiet down and

Buy, buy, buy my new record And buy, buy, buy, send more money Fuck you, buddy Fuck you, buddy Fuck you, buddy Fuck you, buddy
Purchase, purchase, purchase my novel track, and keep purchasing and replenishing my coffers. Screw you, mate. Screw you, mate. Screw you, mate. Screw you, mate.

@@carlosandleon ok, the lyrics are about certain “people” or “fans” (if you will) who started criticizing the band. These people were saying that the band was becoming “soft”, that they were straying from their identity as a band.

This is something that effects many artists. Artists are like many of us who have faced challenges in our childhood, etc. Some challenges make people angry, rebellious, or critical about societal norms and rules.

These people/fans were criticizing the band because “they” saw the band as weaker now that their music was shifting from the hardcore thrasher rock band to one that wasn’t as abrasive. They were accusing the band as “sucking up to the man” rather than what was really happening, which was that the band was evolving, growing, etc. “The man” in this comment is the ‘mainstream music’. Music that is more politically correct, if you will. Music that doesn’t ‘rage against the machine.’

So, this song is a big Fuck You to one such fan who crossed paths with Maynard one day.

The song begins with Maynard describing how this fan was dressed and his overall appearance with his new tattoos, nipple rings etc. (this description is important because it lets you know that this “fan” is new to the hardcore thrashing rock genre.

Maynard is saying that this fan is in fact the man as well (because he chose to purchase music of a certain type and debase other genres) and that he is a joke because he hasn’t yet figured out that “the man” is the combination of ALL our decisions as consumers. So, when this fan is bitching about how TOOL is going soft by sucking up to the man, he is saying that HE is just as much the man as anyone. Which is why, at the end he talks about the guy buying their records and sending more money. It’s just saying what an idiot this guy is because he hasn’t figured out the basic principles of how the music industry or even basic consumerism operates.

Hope This Helps
