Initially playing in colleges, Toquinho's professional career took off in the 1960s at shows promoted by radio personality Walter Silva at the famous Paramount theater in São Paulo. He composed his first recorded song with Chico Buarque entitled "Lua Cheia" (Full Moon). His first big hit was composed in 1970 with Jorge Benjor, "Que Maravilha" (What a Wonder). That same year he was invited by Vinícius de Moraes, co-writer of the worldwide hit song "Garota de Ipanema" (The Girl from Ipanema), to participate in a series of shows in Buenos Aires, forming a solid partnership that would continue for 11 years and produce 120 songs, 25 records and over a thousand shows.
After the death of Vinícius de Moraes in 1980, he went on to pursue a solo career, often performing with other talented musicians like Paulinho da Viola, Danilo Caymmi, Paulinho Nogueira and Chico Buarque. He continues to record and play.

Ninguem ouve cantar cancoes
Ninguem passa mais brincando feliz
E nos coracoes
Saudades e cinzas foi o que restou
Pelas ruas o que se ve
E uma gente que nem se ve
Se beija e se abraca
E sai caminhando
Dancando e cantando cantigas de amor
E no entanto e preciso cantar
Mais que nunca e preciso cantar
E preciso cantar e alegrar a cidade
A tristeza que a gente tem
Qualquer dia vai se acabar
Todos vao sorrir
Voltou a esperanca
Quem me dera viver pra ver
E brincar outros carnavais
The lyrics to "Marcha da 4ª feira de cinzas" by Toquinho & Vinícius reflect on the end of carnival season, a time of joy and celebration, and the transition into a more somber time. The first verse describes the aftermath of carnival: no more singing or playful antics, just sadness and ashes remain in people's hearts. The second verse contrasts the lively scenes of carnival with the quiet and solitary streets after the festivities have ended. Despite this change, the chorus declares that it is still necessary to sing and bring joy to the city.
The third verse offers hope for the future, assuring that the sadness and gloom will eventually fade away. The people will smile again, with renewed hope and the ability to dance and sing about love. The final verse expresses a wish to live long enough to experience more carnival seasons, filled with the beauty and charm of past ones and the songs of peace and harmony.
The lyrics, written by Brazilian poet Vinicius de Moraes, are a reflection on the transient nature of life and the cyclical nature of joy and sorrow. Despite the melancholic tone, they also express a hope for brighter days to come.

Acabou nosso carnaval
Our carnival has ended
Ninguém ouve cantar canções
No one hears songs being sung
Ninguém passa mais brincando feliz
No one passes by playing happily
E nos corações
And in our hearts
Saudades e cinzas foi o que restou
What's left is longing and ashes
Pelas ruas o que se vê
On the streets, what is seen
É uma gente que nem se vê
Is people who don't even see each other
Who don't even smile, kiss or hug each other
E sai caminhando, dançando e cantando cantigas de amor
And walk away, dancing and singing love songs
E no entanto é preciso cantar
Yet it's necessary to sing
Mais que nunca é preciso cantar
More than ever, it's necessary to sing
É preciso cantar e alegrar a cidade
It's necessary to sing and bring joy to the city
A tristeza que a gente tem
The sadness that we have
Qualquer dia vai se acabar
Will one day come to an end
Todos vão sorrir, voltou a esperança
Everyone will smile, hope has returned
And the people who dance, happy to sing in joy
Porque são tantas coisas azuis
Because there are so many blue things
E há tão grandes promessas de luz
And there are such great promises of light
So much love to love, that we don't even know
Quem me dera viver pra ver
I wish I could live to see
E brincar outros carnavais
And play in other carnivals
Com a beleza dos velhos carnavais
With the beauty of the old carnivals
Que marchas tão lindas
With such beautiful marches
And the people singing their peace song
Seu canto de paz
Their peace song
Seu canto de paz
Their peace song
Seu canto de paz
Their peace song
